Abstract

In pre-industrial society, artefacts such as grinding mills powered by water or wind, fulling mills, waterpumps, canals and irrigation ditches were essential tools. They were an important reference in landscape and therefore, they were shown in pictures, maps and other forms of iconography.

The present study focuses on the way these water artefacts, which are  depicted in views of Spanich cities, were collected in the Civitates Orbis Terrarum and also in Pier Maria Baldi’s drawings during the following century, as well as in other illustrations of the time.
