Abstract
Since its declaration as a Biosphere Reservation (1986), as a Naturel Park (1989) and finally as a National Park (1999), the Sierra Nevada, as one of its protected spaces, as well as the Alpujarra region in the province of Granada (Spain), as one of the regions integrated into that space, have been subject to a socioeconomical and environmental study in four of its municipalities: Trevélez, Busquístar, Pórtugos and La Taha. The opinions expressed by the socioeconomic actors and the public and private institutions concerning the environmental problems, about public use and mangement of the protected space presents us a preoccuying geography of disenconters. A nineteenthcentury like style of public management, in which managing, developping and reseving are carried out without regard to the rural and natural regions main protagonists, will make impossible any kind of sustainable developement of the protected spaces in Andaluxia in the twenty-first century.
