Abstract

Juan Carandell Pericay (1893-1937), a geologist and geographer attached to the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, wrote some three hundred books, with a very versatil intellectual and scientific activity: geology, physical, political and regional geography, books of travels and pedagogical journeys, graphic semiology, scientific spreading, and other intellectual and artistic activities. A significant part of these works was devoted to the Betica regions, in general, and particularly to Sierra Nevada. Among those aspects of Sierra Nevada taken under consideration by Carandell we find its geology, geomorphology and tectonics; erosion and its physical and human causes; political geography with special relevance for the question of the environment; and another wide range of topics among which his representations of the landscape stan out, all of them not only a valuzble proof of his solid geological and geographic Knowledge but even of his rather substantial artistic qualification.
