Abstract

This paper presents a classification of medium-size cities of tropical Mexico, according to their economic orientation. In all, 29 urban places are considered for the purposes of the study, they share two basic features: their location in the tropical lands and a 1995-population between one million and 50 thousand inhabitants. One of the major findings of this research is that in 21 cities of those cities, the process of tertiarisation and industrialisation are at the basis of the urban economic change that took place between 1970 and 1995.
