Abstract

The provincial division of 1833 still continues with full validity. The provincial capitals have had their populations constant increase from then on. During the XX century their increase has been considerable, although several phases can differ. The functions of services have generated great part of their socio-economic dynamism, that which has favored their demographic growth. These cities constitute the base of the Spanish urban network. They are also the main centers of the great Spanish urban areas. They constitute, at the same time, fundamental centers in the organization of the national territory.
