Abstract
The 2001 census of the population of Spain contained important new features in terms of both the information requested and the detail of the results obtained. This paper highlights the main actions implemented by the National Institute of Statistics in order to overcome longstanding problems encountered when conducting censuses: reducing financial costs, shortening deadlines for publishing results and strengthening social acceptance of the census. Secondly, attention is drawn to a new factor which is responsible for the demographic growth in Spain during the preceding inter-censual period, namely international immigration. Lastly, some of the new features of the census contents and its most significant profiles are discussed: demographic aging, migrations, foreign immigrant profiles, active and employed population, level of education and student mobility.
