Abstract

This paper offers a survey of the historical record of water harvesting, an explanation of its concept, a description of the main techniques and also presents several examples of rural development based on water collection. Some of the technological improvements on this matter are presented, specifically the concept oasification, that has been recently brought in by the authors, as well as the hydrologic model MODIPÉ (meaning Modificación de Precipitaciones = rainfall alteration), which is specially innovative, as it is the only existing model worldwide suitable for an accurate design of reforestation schemes in arid zones, introducing the concept of water-harvesting. This software-tool appears for the first time with of the project LUCDEME (Lucha contra la Desertificación en el Mediterráneo = fight against desertification in the Mediterranean area) carried out by the Spanish Ministry of Environment.
