Abstract

Given its history and its geographical position, Spain is simultaneously a link between Europe and Latin America as well as between Europe´ southern border and the Islamic world. These two locations have a decisive importance at the moment of establishing the role that Spain has in relation with the migratory currents, considering that it occupies a key role for the access of migratory flows from the South and from Latin America.

The article describes today´ s immigration to Spain, a country with a favoured geopolitical situation on the map of the world, in the European context. Here is analyzed the above mentioned geopolitical position, the reasons behind the emigration and Spain´ s policy to regularize the migratory flows. Likewise, it presents the most important migratory currents to Spain and finally considers some important effects of the migratory phenomenon and the challenges for the future.
