Abstract

Digital enhancement techniques have positively impacted the digitization of rock paintings. This paper delves into the concept of 'tracing' and its distinction from digital outputs arising from the digital treatment of the paintings. Specifically, the notion of signal-to-noise ratio is introduced to highlight the complexity of image data processing. Additionally, prevalent image enhancement methods, such as those based on statistical analysis, are discussed. The paper also outlines the new avenues opened by machine learning in pigment classification on rock surfaces, offering insights into the use of digital techniques in rock painting studies.
