El debate sobre el Antropoceno como oportunidad para repensar la Geografía y su enseñanza

La idea del Antropoceno como época geológica caracterizada por la conversión de la Humanidad en una fuerza de influencia decisiva sobre la dinámica biofísica terrestre apela de forma directa a la Geografía, que tradicionalmente se ha autodefinido como ciencia dedicada al estudio de la interacción entre Sociedad y Naturaleza. Aunque la Geografía anglosajona ya ha reflexionado sobre las implicaciones que para la Geografía tiene la aceptación de la tesis del Antropoceno, escasean en España los análisis dedicados a esta cuestión. En este trabajo se argumenta que, en un contexto antropocénico, no cabe ya sostener que la Sociedad está subordinada a las fuerzas de la Naturaleza, como planteaba la Geografía clásica. Al contrario, los procesos sociales constituyen hoy día un factor determinante en la construcción del territorio debido a la capacidad técnica desarrollada por la Humanidad para modificar el comportamiento de los sistemas biofísicos terrestres. Esta nueva perspectiva tiene implicaciones para la enseñanza, la investigación y el ejercicio aplicado de la Geografía que se discuten aquí y que pueden sintetizarse en la necesidad de colocar los procesos territoriales en el centro de la docencia, la investigación y el diseño de medidas de intervención.
