Abstract

The present work is part of a wider research project aimed at understanding the dynamics of occupation and territorial exploitation in south-western Sardinia and, more specifically, in the coastal district of Sulcis-Iglesiente, during the Bronze Age, an epoch characterised by the genesis and development of the Nuragic cultural phenomenon. Special attention has been paid to the southern sector of Sulcis-Iglesiente, specifically to the coastal strip including, from north to south, the municipalities of Portoscuso and San Giovanni Suergiu. Attempts to reconstruct the settlement patterns and territorial organisation of the Nuragic communities settled in the area were carried out through the use of GIS tools, through which all the available geological, pedological and archaeological data were organised, interpolated and analysed in order to highlight any spatial and visual correlations between the settlements and the different types of soil present, the latter classified according to their potential for exploitation and workability in relation to farming techniques archaeologically documented in the contemporary island contexts.
