TITULI PICTI ON OIL AMPHORAE FROM BAETICA REFERED TO STATIO SEL AND STATIO SEX FOUND IN MONTE TESTACCIO OF ROME, AND ITS GEO-HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Abstract
We are studying a collection of tituli picti on amphorae from the 3rd century AD. They belong to the group which shows the generic state control text: fisci rationis patrimoni provinciae Baeticae followed by the words, in the examples we report: statio sel or statio sex. In our opinion, these signs have neither been identified nor valued properly. Regarding this, we suggest they refer two ancient Mediterranean coastal stations in two Mediterranean settlements: Sel (Salobreña, Granada) and Sex (Sexs/Sexi, Almuñécar, Granada). To argue this proposal, we set out an epigraphic-archeological analysis of these inscriptions and about its supposed original geoeconomic context: the ager or land in Iliberis (Granada), concernir its olive oil production; potter’s workshops from Sel’s surroundings where these Dressel 20 amphorae were made for its transport and the probable land route Iliberis-Sel/Sex, prior to its shipping to Rome.
