Abstract

This paper overviews the current tasks carried out by the Guardia Civil (Spanish Civil Guard) in defense of the Spanish historical heritage, particularly of the archaeological objects and sites, according to the experience of the Grupo de Patrimonio Histórico (Historical Heritage Group) of the Unidad Central Operativa (Central Operative Unit), as specialised unit in this subject. In orden to do this, the responsabilities of the Guardia Civil, via different units, such as Unidad Central Operativa, territorial units, Jefatura Fiscal y Fronteras, the Servicio de Protección de la Naturaleza, the Unidad Espacial de Actividades Subacuáticas, the Servicio Marítimo and the Servicio Aéreo of the Guardia Civil, have been considered. The Guardia Civil collaborates with other public administrations and members of the privated sector into the “Plan para la Defensa del Patrimonio Histórico” framework.
