Abstract
The necropolis of Porta Nocera is a valuable example of ancient Roman cemetery. In this necropolis we can observe how the public and private spaces within the burial areas were delimited. The sidewalks and the termini delimited these spaces. The sidewalks were private and public spaces at the same time, because they were built and maintained by the neighbours, but they were for public use. The termini were stones placed on the edges of the sidewalks and they marked the limit between public and private spaces within the city walls as well as in rural areas.
