Introduction: This article focuses on the knowledge generated through various participatory processes in areas marked by social exclusion, where the exchange of life experiences between different groups is encouraged.
Method: Relationship networks have been established with the aim of giving rise to new knowledge, which may arise from the feedback between the most socially vulnerable people, the associations and the students in master's training at the University of the Basque Country. Five social and tangible challenges are presented, in which individual and collective competences were analyzed through action participation workshops and the role of a collective consciousness has been considered.
Results: The systematization and critique of the participatory action research experiences has made it possible to identify the characteristics of the coexistence spaces and community bonds that have emerged, the values and consensus on common interests, rights and needs. The participation processes have redefined life trajectories and made people aware of what participation implies and the presence of those “different from us”.
Conclusions: The self-reflection and assessment of their own and common learning, by different agents (educational, professional and community), highlights the weaknesses, strengths and opportunities that need to be addressed in order to be competent in the development of social cohesion dynamics. It fosters the collective development of discourse around participatory action research and its capacity to drive social transformation and address segregation in educational contexts.
