Abstract

In the Southern Cone and Brazil, where they had bloody military dictatorships, the democracy/dictatorship dualism complicates a critical examination of contemporary democracies. The recent rise of the extreme right and various neo-fascisms revives fears that reinforce this dualism. However, in the last years a series of political events and the judicialization of politics in these countries have uncovered anti-democratic dynamics that question the functioning of the rule of law and the judicial system in the contemporary democracies of the region. This article studies these tensions as they show in Brazilian poet Augusto de Campos’ “contrapoemas” (2018-2019) about the imprisonment of the then-former President Lula da Silva.
