En la Historia Lausiaca, escrita probablemente en el primer cuarto del s. V, Paladio describe con detalle numerosos aspectos de las prácticas ascéticas, milagros y enseñanzas de los hombres y mujeres que, en la renuncia a los bienes materiales, encontraron el camino hacia la perfección espiritual. A través de relatos biográficos, inspirados en lo que él mismo vivió en sus viajes por Egipto, Palestina y también en Roma, Paladio compuso esta obra con el fin de que estas narraciones protagonizadas por hombres y mujeres santos sirvieran de ejemplo en la formulación del ideal espiritual cristiano. Los deberes sociales y la entrega a los demás es esencial en el logro de una verdadera perfección cristiana, incluyendo la atención a los enfermos. Este trabajo explora desde un abordaje léxico cómo el binomio salud-enfermedad constituye un eje narrativo en esta obra fundamental para conocer la historia del monasticismo primitivo.
