Abstract

The book Del telar a la tabla. Los tejidos andalusíes en la pintura del Renacimiento valenciano (From the Loom to the Table: Andalusian Fabrics in Valencian Renaissance Painting) by Araceli Moreno Coll is a reference work for the study of Andalusian textile heritage and its visual representation in Valencian Renaissance painting. Derived from her doctoral thesis and with a clearly interdisciplinary approach, the volume analyses fabrics as a cultural palimpsest that reveals continuities and transfers between the Islamic world and Christianity. The author presents a solid theoretical and methodological framework, paying special attention to terminological precision and historiographical debates around concepts such as “Mudejar” and “Moorish”.

One of the main themes of the study is the analysis of Andalusian textiles as luxury goods integrated into Mediterranean trade networks, now largely dispersed or lost, which requires the use of documentary and visual sources. Moreno Coll examines Andalusian and Moorish textile production, the continuities after the conquest of Granada and the circulation of these fabrics in Christian contexts. The core of the book focuses on the survival and reinterpretation of Islamic motifs in Valencian painting, especially in workshops such as those of Osona and Hernandos. The work proposes a reading of Renaissance art as a space of cultural hybridisation and establishes itself as a fundamental contribution to understanding the complex visual history of Valencia in the 15th and 16th centuries.
