Abstract

The Christ of La Laguna is an important sculpture of Flemish art from the 16th century. In this work, new contributions are added that could contribute to a greater understanding of the work, contextualizing it in its scope of production as well as relating it to various plastic manifestations of the Christological iconography of Nordic art. Likewise, aesthetic antecedents and parallels with the art of the time are established. In addition, its influence and significance in the art produced in the Canary Islands and its quality as an icon of high symbolic and spiritual value have been valued. On the other hand, reference is made to the role played by the Franciscans on the Canary Islands, protectors of the image since they arrived in La Laguna in 1520.
