This paper examines the scope and limits of Artificial Intelligence in legal reasoning, exploring how AI replicates the rational processes underlying the interpretation and application of the law, paradigmatically represented within the judicial context. Firstly, the legal and technical concept of AI is reviewed. Secondly, the philosophical debate surrounding the possibility of reproducing human cognitive faculties in synthetic entities is analysed. Subsequently, the functioning of large language models, capable of simulating theoretical and practical reasoning, is described. Finally, the paper addresses the possibilities and limitations of AI in legal argumentation from different conceptions of law, particularly concerning the justification of judicial decisions.
