Abstract

This article aims to describe the functioning of the construction "y no + verb" in relation to proficiency levels, the identification of mirativity, and preferred verb tense in Spanish. Through purposive sampling with uniform quota allocation, 210 responses were collected from participants across 21 Spanish-speaking countries. They evaluated the grammaticality and the surprise value of the structure within their dialectal variety, based on whether they were familiar with or used the expression and whether they associated it with an admirative context. Quantitative analysis reveals that proficiency levels vary significantly according to the participants' country of origin, while the identification of the surprise value correlates with the verb tense used and the speaker's nationality. Moreover, participants more frequently recognize mirativity when the construction "y no + verb" is used with past tenses, although other temporal categories may also convey admirative meanings. These findings highlight the need for further investigation into the factors influencing the grammaticalization processes of mirativity markers in different Spanish dialects.
