Art History and Karaoke: Six Hands and a Cheese Sandwich
Pichler, Michalis
We cannot precisely say what is not appropriation. Impossible to draw a categorical line. Appropriation is practiced everywhere and all the time, also by people who never have heard the word. As someone said before, no author has his complete meaning alone.

Books dealing with architecture are a specific genre within the publishing world. Gustavo Gili put together an exemplary editorial project, in which theory and design created a unitary framework of publications that was established as a working model for this type of essays. Moisés Puente, editor at Gustavo Gili, presents this text as a record of files with the most relevant architecture collections published by GG throughout the second half of the 20th century. The article begins with the series Architecture and criticism and closes with the magazine 2G. A review of authors and designers is presented along with images of the emblematic covers of these books, a study that has been carried out for the first time and that constitutes a valuable historiographic document.

If there is a product that defines tourism, that is (was) the postal card (which also is called tourist). The postcards select the frames of what to see, present the main monuments of the destinations, the views of the cities, their most desirable landscapes, and also propose the point of view from which we must look. At the end of the 19th century, postcards began to have illustrations on one of their faces as aesthetic ornament (something that two decades later would become the very essence of the postcard). The illustrated postcard was a cultural and communication phenomenon as a result of advances in photogravure at the beginning of the 20th century. Then began the massive consumption of images and the postcard turned out to be the tourist product par excellence, a summary of the world that shows us the scenery of happiness and the new tourist landscape of Spain.

The basis of Joan Rabascall’s work are printed texts and images found in published media. His work, which circles ethnographic studies, focuses on tourist publications, and manily on postcards. The «Marca España» during the Franco era is a fundamental line in the work of Rabascal. Following this line, Rabascall has written for SOBRE_N5 a historical, linear essay about the postal card and its link with social, artistic movements and, naturally, with tourism during Spain in the 70s and 80s. This is a story made up of images and text that place us within a social context where the postcard is a main part, since it contributes to its creation: it diffuses the imaginary of «the Spanish», while reflecting the rancidity of the images of the tourism in Spain after the 70s. The selected images come from the artist’s collection and make up a frieze and a frame to fit the text, creating both, an artist’s work.

Nicholas Sinclair is an English photographer who lives and works between London and Berlin; His photographic work expressed a great commitment to the subject and exhibits an intriguing set of gazes where identities are exposed. In 1995, the Brighton Museum commissioned a series of photographs for the catalogue of the exhibition «Fetishism: Visualizing Power and Desire», the first monographic presentation on fetishism to be held in Britain. This initial photographic project along with other portraits of performance artists, modern primitives, and in general subjects who built their identity through the body gave rise to the book The Chameleon Body: Photographs of Contemporary Fetishism that Nicholas Sinclair published in 1996. This review presents some of the most emblematic photographs that expose different points of view of the body that, like a chameleon, constantly transforms itself. We will try to enter through the camera of Nicholas Sinclair in a world that seems from another time, but that still remains beating below the surface, portraits of people that offer diverse and possible bodily realities, in some cases far from a false idea of the exotic.

Fossil Free Culture NL (FFC-NL) is an artists and activists collective based in the Netherlands, whose main goal is to break the sponsorship and ties between fossil fuel corporations and cultural institutions.
Through their artistic proposals, FFC-NL highlights the cognitive dissonance between the mission of a cultural institution that promotes and preserves culture, and the acceptance of funding from a corporation that is responsible for the destruction of cultures and the natural systems that sustain biodiversity on this planet, including human life. Without these systems culture would not be possible.
With their performative actions and counter-advertising strategies, their work has achieved important accomplishments, such as the Van Gogh Museum (2018) and the Concertgebouw (2020) breaking ties with Royal Dutch Shell, achieving a fossil-fuel free Museumplein in Amsterdam, the cultural heart of the Netherlands.

Hidden Sounds-Private and Public, Imaginary, Rescued, and Restored: Cartographies of Sound (2021-2022)

arte sonoro
cartografías sonoras
sonidos ocultos
A child looks out the window of a moving car. He tries to focus on some point in the landscape that captivates him, something strange, a gesture. Nothing he can see excites him, and he gets angry. The present has lost its interest; it is now a white frieze and there is nothing worth rescuing. The boy is the son of a sound documentary filmmaker who is travelling with his mother to the Sonoran Desert. Upon surveying it, he thinks to himself: “Maybe if we find a new way of documenting the world, we’ll begin to understand this new way of experiencing time and space”.
The cartographies we propose in this work constitute a dogged quest in that direction: a reflection on what and how to document is now urgent. There is a conviction that runs through the entire corpus that is based on the unwavering belief that sound holds its secrets under lock and key. It buries them like a living thing, far from the quotidien, just for the sake of preserving something of value. In each place, there is a sound at the level of the earth, which is that which reaches the ears; but other sounds lie elsewhere. They nest up on high or down below, in the broken or the small, in the remains and the resonances. There is no city that does not have—or does not hide— the forbidden, the marginal, and the dirty, as well as its scandals, its shame and ignominies. They do not appear on Google Maps or in hotel displays. But, there they are. And they make a sound, and they reverberate.
This is what this collection is about.
Y suenan, y resuenan.
De esto se trata, pues, esta colección.
