The notion of objectivity has always been associated with the processes of legitimization of knowledge. It constitutes a normalizer that has provided the cornerstone for the major epistemological models since Modernity and that continues to uphold its unshakeable status as regulator of gnosiological progression. Considering the humanities, in general, and artistic practice, in particular, as a field of knowledge that is subject to the volubility of the subjective and/or the emotional – a notion that is broadly accepted – has left them in a precarious position as regards their capacity to produce useful knowledge beyond the immediate sphere in which they operate. This article traces a discourse on the legitimacy of the reference points that are assumed and/or established to provide an irrefutable position in the face of the difficulty of allowing – and therefore accrediting within the subsumed program of utility – reference points that are subjective and operate as local modules of knowledge.

The editing discipline within art drives and captures all of the creative force associated with the preparatory phases and moments that precede the work of the artist. Editing thus reveals itself to be a high-performance creative research laboratory, out of which new formats and artistic research materials will emerge. The flexibility and experimental nature of this way of working – one that approaches editing as an artistic genre in its own right – allows us to propose creative experiences from which to actively generate publics and stances based on a commitment to the cultural, above and beyond current trends or the climate in the sector.

In this text we consider the approach taken by many artists to apply their practice to the problems and processes of social order. On the one hand, we present the ways in which certain artistic practices of a collaborative nature are conceived as exercises that question and critique both the art system and its institutions and also other fields and their respective institutional apparatus, such as education or the media. On the other hand, from a cross-cutting perspective we highlight different strategies or mechanisms in which the labor of editing has become a tool for translating and circulating the knowledge generated via the contextual work associated with the practice of art.

In this text we will present the context of creation and exegesis of Ediciones Originales. We take a recent exhibition of some of the editions published over the course of two decades by this imprint as the focal point for a reflection on the contradictory editorial shift that can be seen across the different editions from this multifaceted publishing house. We analyze the imprint’s professional reference points – models of editing, distribution and production that are leading the company to reconsider its very structure and its future projects. The extended notion of the literary work as an artistic work or multiple edition; the contribution of editing to the creation of subjectivities, emphasizing forms of consciousness, experience, and the subjective aspect of human relationships; published authors; and a special focus on the reconstitution of what were once marginal stories … all of these form part of our drive toward the search for new editorial meaning for the future.

Architecture journals play an essential role in both teaching architecture and also in the dissemination and critique of the activities undertaken by practitioners from the discipline. This marked influence evolved significantly – virtually alongside the profession itself – throughout the 20th Century. Contemporary social, cultural and, above all, technological changes are far from inconsequential in this relationship. The present article therefore focuses on the work of architecture journal editors in the early 21st Century, an era dominated by information technologies. With Google as a paradigm of the influence of these technologies on our lives, we are led to question exactly what has changed and what still remains of the more classical notion of editing. This is a natural evolution that seeks to widen the physical dimension of publications and exploit the possibilities offered by environments that have revolutionized how we interact with journals.

During the decade of 1960 the concept of the artist’s book arose with a subversive carácter: it was used by artists to scape from the museums and art galleries’ system so they would be able to approach to a wider audience. Nevertheless, several times institutions copied these models to their own purposes. We will find artist’s publications which are presented as exhibition catalogues, advertising brochures, or even as art exhibi- tions. One of the clearest examples in carry- ing out this practice would be the conceptual art sponsor Seth Siegelaub.

This text questions some of the reasons and methods why the book of photography has become the medium of many of the photographic projects about territory in the last years. From the idea of photogra- phy of territory as a new interpretation of the landscape and the inner logic of the format, the different legibility of the photographic project is analysed according to the elements proper of the discourse. Trough Xavier Ribas’ project Nomads as the main case study, ele- ments such as edition, sequencing and nar- ration of the image are considered in the book as part of the artistic practice of photography of territory.

This paper proposes a socio-critical review and reflection related to collaborative learning environment as pedagogical agent and its relationship with artistic-practice communities of collective creativity. The main goal of this research is to introduce the case study 3 weeks bside project experience (3WBPE, from now on). Through participatory action research and the analysis of different concepts and their practical and theoretical aspects. In the framework of an education self-manage- ment development universe, the project pro- cess is based on a collaborative learning. It is focused on the constructions of a common discourse about the idea of territory that is represented in a publication and site specific exhibition. 3WBPE allowed setting up stanc- es that suggest a social interaction transfer related to construction of belong, participa- tion and transformation environment, ques- tion a teacher role or collective creation of a project, emphasizing the importance of pro- cess as a goal, beyond of culture artifact pro- ductions.

The appropriation of the expression «revised and enlarged edition», from the traditional publishing jargon, is presented in this article as a hypotheses to characterize contemporary publishing practices. It consid- ers the publication, in all its stages, as a writing space and as a process that never resigns creativity and criticism. These practices are «revised» (revisited) because they imply the problematization of practice, through an exploratory attitude or critic, leading to processes and discourses prepared for a permanent review. And «en- larged» because they expand the operations of each editorial production phase, they iden- tify alternative formats and models, they blur traditional roles (author/editor/designer/ reader) and question editing as a mere me- diation for the creation, circulation, reception or reading processes. In this article, we will identify some of the principles and emerging phenomena that help us understand editorial production as an artistic or a literary genre.
To make a documentary about a period in history such as that of Paraguay’s dictatorship under Stroessner – a first- person account based on personal and family research – may at first appear ill-conceived. The present article on ‘Cuchillo de Palo’ by director Renate Costa looks at how the performative or poetic documentary can provide a highly effective means of activating historical memory of an intensely traumatic period such as this. The work analyzes how the documentary, driven by Costa’s personal motivations and concerns, paints an accurate and unforgiving portrait of the silence and fear inherent in the terror of dictatorship and the many disciplinary resources at its disposal. Her portrait also captures the bloody repression of homosexuality and the virulent homophobia deeply ingrained in Paraguayan society. This article aims to understand how the director – using photographs, documents, interviews and oral testimony – produces a filmic text in which the micro leads into the macro-story. Family conflicts evolve into generational conflicts and, ultimately, into the societal breakdown and reconciliation of the country in the aftermath of the traumas of dictatorship. Here we see a connection between filmic documentary and editing – the cornerstone of this journal – as creators of stories and generators of knowledge.

Self-portraits of the artists’ book: editorial criteria in the work of Román Gil

They way in which artists’ books are perceived depends, for the most part, on editorial criteria that accept the book as a bibliographical artifact which depends on the conditions of its typographical printing. However, if the book takes on its symbolic meaning, it may l ead to the reconsideration of the boundaries of the art-f orm itself, redefining the relationship between artists and spectators in such a way that a self-portrait of all of those involved can be configured.

This article addresses the complex and contradictory relationship contemporary, welfare societies have with accidents. Despite their taboo nature, the media overexposes accidents. Enrique Metidines’ work intends to raise awareness regarding the accidents that occur in our everyday lives. The poem “Kill Plato”, by Chantal Maillard, deals with the difficulties we have when it comes to understanding a tragic accident as a Deleuzean event, due to the prevalence of idealism. This article proposes a flexible methodology and a transversal approach to knowledge, where Gilles Deleuze’s rhizomatic thinking is present.

The goal of this essay is to introduce a new methodological approach that could be applied to architectural research, and therefore, to the practice of teaching architecture. The methodology developed, which has an arts-based research background, uses photographic pairing, photographic series and photo-essays as strategies. During the experimentation process, data is compiled and results are drawn from images. In this way of approaching the matter, images are responsible for laying out, developing and concluding a discourse. Moreover, this study will assess the relevance of photography when it comes to approaching architecture, allowing us to explore the visual potential of images, since they enable the communication of the specific values in accordance to each research. Exploring the links between artistic and architectural disciplines may contribute to the discovery of places from which to begin to understand reality differently.

Our identity can be observed through the role that architecture plays in its construction from an amplified point of view, without adhering to the purely formal aspects of the discipline. The idea of the “Marlboro Man” drawn from documenting the pioneers of the Midwestern United States, citizen self-surveillance in the German Democratic Republic in the 1970s, or the crys tallization of the bourgeois class society in the design of the Besanç on Theather are just some of the examples that can help us understand the role of Territory, City and Architecture in the construction of the collective subconscious. If we understand architecture in the terms laid out by Michel Foucault, that is, as an instrument of power in which control strategies, body disciplines and biopolitical devices converge, it is easier to understand the city as a battlefield in which the subtleties of identity are forged. In the same way, the image of ar chitecture and the way it has been narrated have gradually built the subconscious of the discipline.

The article gathers some of the ideas upon which Mela Dávila based her contribution to the seminary Memoria y desacuerdo: políticas del archivo, registro y álbum familiar (Huesca, October 20th-22nd, 2016). Through three case studies, Crónicas Mecas; Territorio archivo and Sammlung Mina Menz, by the German artist Gesa Lange, she considers how the notions of identity, archive and photography are influenced by the everyday act of picture taking. The first is a social project of family albums that the community of O Grove in Pontevedra is developing on Facebook. The second work began in Cerezales del Condado (León) and it is an online archive project. It compiles pictures from family albums that are organized by topics. This archive includes voices of the protagonists or their families, explaining the pictures they have contributed to the project. The last work is not strictly an archive, but an artists’ book that considers the notion of the passage of time, where classic ways of documenting the past (drawing and photography) are subverted. It is an abstract photographic chronicle, focused on the absence of the characters who once populated the scene under observation. The interaction of fields, disciplines and epistemological practices are shared aspects of these three projects, allowing us to relate photography to anthropology, sociology and personal memory.

Jean-Luc Nancy
The proposal that will be followed here under the term re-tracing practices will try to assume Jean-Luc Nancy’s theses that suggest a departure from all traditional politics, from the political understood as the ultimate foundation. What will be attempted to do, will be to integrate Nancy’s approach to the political, and her writings on the city, with the recognition of concrete practices that also assume the political as something alive and not conditioned by last foundations. In this way, art can be defined as practices in which these two forms converge, and so it can be said that the artistic practices –margins, those of the peripheries, which often occur in silence and parallel to the legitimating institution– are concrete practices that interrupt, re-trace and produce another city.

In recent years, a large number of art institutions strive to translate temporary artistic sensibilities into new cultural experiences. The growing interest in adapting the exhibition programs to present both, new and old performance art pieces, is pointing out towards this direction. Immateriality, temporality and direct interaction with the public, articulates new mechanisms in the cultural production. In this context, if performance-art emerged in the second half of the 20th century as a subversive artistic tool, trying to query the market and cultural institutions, the absorption and transformation of performance into new products for cultural consumption, generates a series of problems that affect its own essence. In this article we try to analyze certain changes in the ontological values from which the rhetoric of performance is constructed. The delicate relationship between the ephemeral art and its documentation, fuels a debate about the capacity of performance artists to defend an anti-capitalist discourse. In this sense, we analyze certain methodological strategies based on the use of a durational temporality in the museum. This aspect leads us to propose an objectualizationof the performer’s body, since it becomes a living document. These approaches are integrated into a cultural strategy that we could define as a capitalization of the ephemeral.

The present text exposes the different formative strategies carried out for the teaching of the production of artist’s books and other publishing projects at the graduate level (master’s degree). In this sense, different projects developed within the Master in Creative Studies and Processes in Art and Design (MEPCAD), attached to the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez (Chihuahua, Mexico), and the pedagogical experiences that derive from them are described. Specifically, two cases are presented: Frankenstein: tras el relato de lo monstruoso, experimental edition based on methods of random, collective and collaborative creation and, didactic for the creation of artist books based poetically on the analogical hermeneutics and the methodology of the research based on practice (IBA). Both, teaching-learning strategies that have allowed us to channel several challenges in the same timeline, contributing to the construction of projects that insert young people into the world of contemporary publishing in a holistic manner.

The fanzines sustained principally by the documentary photo, personified the collaboration spirit in the Graffiti of the 90s through a process of exchange of specific and unpublished information until then. We analyzed all this at a time when the distance communication system among graffiti writers was based exclusively on postal mail. Our case study focuses on a very specific context, the Graffiti scene in the city of Granada, from its gestation as a movement (1992-1993) to the arrival of the Internet (1997-1998), covering a dynamic period in which graphic and visual material was produced. In this way, we will consider the existing parallelism between the ways of doing in Graffiti and methods of editing and diffusion, analyzing the concepts of traveling, exploring and sharing information

The present article approaches the Atlas of photographs, collages and sketches of Gerhard Richter from the logics of archival aesthetics. For this, the tradition of the atlases is studied in its documentary aspect and how its artistic production has to do with the multiplicity of readings, discontinuities and fragments of the society of its time. Then the Richter Atlas is analyzed as a file, in a broad sense, as well as the functions it develops from this understanding. In the third place, the discourse focuses on the bilderatlas Mnemosyne by Aby Warburg and the connection established between it and that of Richter, with its similarities and differences. To, finally, reflect in iconic terms, on the very nature of the atlas as a mnemonic archive. A documentary work about the iconic that forces the gaze of those who contemplate it and immerses it in the infinity of its multiple readings.

Ad Reinhardt was a painter but also developed a large production of press, graphic design and cartoons. These were not merely a means to earn his bread and butter, but are works with an ethic, aesthetic an ideological commitment, though are separate from his paintings. His best known comic, How to Look… published by PM newspaper is one of the most original twentieth century comics and a reflection on what modern art is, its concepts, vices and virtues. Besides, he was involved in many mastheads as editor or art director in some of them. This implication with editorial politics has a deep commitment similar to that of his well-known Black Paintings.

The presented article examines a series of artistic initiatives that are managed outside the usual official cultural models of two case study cities: Bilbao and Guanajuato (Mexico). The analysis addresses the factors that facilitate the creation of the «cultural city» model as a means to be adopted by cities that seek an economic spur from culture. In both cases, culture plays an important role in the creation of a city brand: as the cities become new consumer products, their cultural offer is standardized. The artistic projects undertaken are positioned outside the official sphere while being embedded in the specific contexts and in the identity of each place. The spaces that have been used or that have motivated each project manifest a strong symbolic and historical load, and display their own forms of associationism and self-sustaining activities.

ABSTRACT: Appropriatism embodies the current cultural production system where democratization of consumption has led to massive reproduction, cloning and exponential multiplication of cultural products. By questioning notions such as authorship, authenticity and uniquenes of works might be considered heresy, a crime by some or a perceptive concept by others. This article analyzes its value not only as a necessary reflection of our time but also as the paradoxical situation in which we live, in which under the discourses of appropriation the postmodern purity hides its narcissism, simulating the disappearance of the author, who actually sanctifies through various means, complaining at the bottom of certain excess, of certain democratic debauchery in art.

In the arts and architecture of modernity it was tried to exclude the narrative/symbolic moment from both its production and its reception. However, and despite the attempts to remove from the architectural work any component that remits outside of it, it could happen that the mere action of perceiving –the built-up, or any other object– constituted an act in part linguistic from the beginning that, as such, contravene a speech about the contemplated inextricably interwoven with the pure-sensitive. The abstract form also acquires a multiplicity of senses and meanings through diverse mechanisms, some of which will be examined here briefly from a plurality of perspectives. The question of the narrativity of the architectural experience and the consequent possibility of representing the architectural through the word are of great importance for the development of the discipline.

The language of the comic is increasingly present in architecture as we can see in the illustrative strips or diagrams present in projects by leading architects such as Bjarke Ingels (BIG), MVRDV or Neutelings & Riedijk, among others. And at the same time, architecture is represented in the comics by sketchers such as Chris Ware or Richard McGuire. Thus, the two arts have their own narrative and are conceived in a remarkably similar way. Koldo Lus Arana, under the pseudonym Klaus, is another architect and university professor who, since 2005, shares his professional and academic activity with that of a comic artist. Through an unpublished interview carried out by the authors, their graphic and cartoon narrative is presented in which the interactions between comics, fiction and architecture are analyzed; without forgetting the reference authors who have used the vignette as a graphic tool to interpret architectural themes from critique and creative philosophy to pedagogy service

In this article we give a different point of view about the performative action of walking, through the transdisciplinarity which is present in the work of the artist Juan del Junco. In his work mix an own methodology in Natural Science, specially in Ornithology, with other own methodology as artist: walking, researching and creating. The objective is to show how this methodology can become emotional cartographies that change according to need in different formats: exhibition, books, artistic installations, etc. A%er the analysis of some works by del Junco, we have the conclusion that the cathographies can lead to the origins, the cosmographies, through the family traditions as the figure of the father and it remember us the appearance of the sung, living map. The pre-writing map, definitely, the songlines.

We discuss the editorial techniques of a heterogeneous set of 20th century experimental books of architecture, today considered seminal works. Following the methodology of cultural studies, we will read them in controversy with the design techniques that crystallize with the impulse of the cultural economy in mass society. We will see how in them the use of imaginative montage confronts the fragmentation and framing effects commonly adopted in the presentation of architecture as building technology. Considering these relationships will allow us to identify the keys that would define a possible critical genre to be investigated, the editorial essay. If fragmentation and framing can be linked to different mechanisms of externalization of the critical, the connectivity and deviations encouraged by imaginative montage —a cognitive and persuasive technique, as well— bring the editorial essay closer to the rescue operations of the forgotten and the excluded characteristic of cultural criticism.

DreamCity is an experimental documentary trilogy made in three neighbourhoods in different Spanish cities: San Antón in Cuenca, San Francisco in Bilbao, and Russafa in Valencia. The documentaries are structured around the story of Ayoub, a little migrant boy who guides us via this investigation across the three cities that represent three stages of his life. Here, numerous voices and protagonists work to build a choral story that is threaded together with artistic interventions and actions— «human acts capable of changing the nature of the city »—given that the city is, itself, a complex relationship between its physical forms and the social forces at play. Having a right to the city gives the city its meaning as a place mediated by the law. It means asserting one’s rights as expressed through the law.

Recovery and distribution of video art works in the Spanish context: The case of Carles Pujol
Alcoz, Albert
The preservation of the original formats of an artistic discipline such as video art has been of interest to scholars for a number of years. Video distributors and contemporary art museums are the primary organizations tasked with recovering and raising awareness of the pioneering works of video-creation. The fragility of magnetic tapes and the obsolescence of analogue video formats used in the 1960s–1980s render it difficult for these works to last over time. This article investigates the case of Carles Pujol, one of the most renowned Spanish artists in the history of international video art. Among other themes, the article observes how the Catalan artist creates new versions of old video installations, incorporating present-day technological devices in place of the outdated. It also recounts how a representative selection of his single-channel pieces is incorporated into the catalogue of video distributor HAMACA. Both topics speak to the current consolidation of the digital format and its unquestionable place in the future of video art.

From Biomechanics to Biopolitics: On Contemporary Ways of Being -The Productive, the Urban, the Boring, and the Theatrical in the Citizen's Conformation with the Environment

The contemporary ways in which we operate, in an eminently urban environment, lead me to wonder whether there might be another horizon—something other than time-worn neoliberalism, the stagnant bureaucratized state, and the catalyzing vertigo of hyper-commodification. The revolutionary ways of being, both industrial and artistic, that took hold in the urban environment during the Russian avant-garde and that rendered the transformation of the political environment possible, are presented here as a model whose emancipatory potential was repressed by the USSR and, later, engulfed by the society of capital. This brief survey of four ways of being that I consider particularly relevant is conveyed through four brief biographies of Russian figures that show their relationship to the times in which they lived and provide a glimpse of the questions that, even today, they raise. The core issue here is the relationship between the citizen, in their ways of being—productive, urban, boring, and theatrical—and their dynamic co-formation with the environment.

At a time when the Internet has emerged as the new bastion of egomaniacal consumerism, it seems necessary to turn again to art as an engine of social change. Although it may seem difficult to talk about Internet art based on the philosophies of an artist who died before the implementation of the World Wide Web, the aim of this qualitative research is to rescue and give visibility to the existing and barely theorized relations between the artistic-spiritual editing policies advocated by Robert Filliou's Eternal Network and certain participatory strategies developed within Internet art.

This article intends to offer a dynamic classification that allows us to define and develop what a post-internet pictorial practice implies in contemporary times. The first part of the article will be dedicated to a brief historical review of the post-internet condition, as well as to conceptualizing the practice as the type of painting that has suffered the impact of the Internet and digital technologies in any material and visual field of its process. The rest of the article will provide a taxonomy of this pictorial practice, based on its ways of virtualizing and appropriating the languages of ciberspace in analog space, with four main categories proposed: immediate painting, repetitive painting, screen painting and idiot painting.
