In the framework of the reflection about the permeability of boundaries in a globalised world the current study draws attention to the new ways of constructing nationality and internationality nowadays. The former refers to migration and inner diversity in the Spanish-speaking countries, whereas the latter requires a revaluation of both factors, which will ensure welfare not through an extreme militarization but through a legal defense of human rights and through the political awareness and acceptance of mixtures and cultural differences. In this respect, dialogue between the United States, Europe and Latin America becomes essential since these are the authorities which are involved in the laying of foundations of an international character in the Western World. Neither the demand of market nor the reality of the mass media allow to question the validity of the afore-mentioned international nature. It is essential then to understand the deep implications of the development of a transatlantic culture as it is also necessary that this give strong support to law, education and youth as the main possible change agents.

This article describes what its author understands to be the decolonial epistemological theory. Firstly, Mignolo accomplishes an initial criticism of the subsumption of History by an European eurocentric historicism, secondly he revives Quijano's concept of the decolonial matrix of power, or coloniality, as a fundamental category for the decolonial theory. Mignolo compares one side of decolonial thinking (undisciplined in the sense of Foucault) to the disciplines that follow the modernity/posmodernity theory with the goal of vindicating the usefulness of the decolonial option in order to reveal the darker side of a critical apparatus which controls knowledge, assigns values and atributions for building the similarities and differences from other options and critical projects such as neomarxism and the Philosophy of LIberation. Finally, he analizes the perpetuity of the struggle for domination over the colonial matrix of power in the current New Global Order, to which the decolonial project new perspectives.

We have attempted to show how, from the beginning of the 20th century, the development of Spanish poetry, which culminates in the Generación del 27, is closely related to Spanish American intellectual life. Alfonso Reyes, for example, begins his studies of Góngora in Mexico around the 1910s when in Spain interest in the work of this poet has hardly been aroused. On the other hand, at the beginning of avant-garde tendencies, Spanish American writers such as Vicente Huidobro or Jorge Luis Borges are decisive in the conformation of these movements in Spain. Later, at the end of the twenties and the beginning of the thirties, writers like Pablo Neruda contribute to the conformation of a “Spanish surrealism”, which has considerable importance for some members of the Generación del 27 such as García Lorca, Vicente Aleixandre or Miguel Hernández. They also contribute to the controversy which arises over pure art.

The influence of Bécquer in Latin America has been well-known during last thirty years of the 19th century, as much in poets as in narrators. Within Peru, the authors whose works can show footprints of Bécquer are Ricardo Palma and Manuel González Prada, who were considered the best poets of their generation. In Gonzalez Prada's conference in "El Ateneo de Lima" in 1886, he emphasizes the genius of the Sevillian as opposed to the mediocrity of the Peruvian authors who have imitated him. In addition, the influence of Bécquer in González Prada arises in many of his verses and stylistic procedures. Prada, the great "maker of verses", introduced new kinds of verses not seen in Hispanic Poetry. He knew of to assimilate the peculiar style of the Sevillian, and to reflect it in many of its subjects and topics. The German inheritance that influenced Bécquer's verses was the necessity and survival of poetry, the platonism that favors the soul against the body, the fundamental questions over existence.

This study contends that the reading frame for Los adioses (1954) initiates a game of conjectures and interpretations based on doubt and ambiguity. The result of this game is a re-vision of reading and writing in so far as they are intellectual activities. There is a process of "eternal return" to Los adioses, an unrelenting search for clues that the text does not reveal, and thus we engage in constant re-reading and re-writing. In this cyclical beginning, where everything repeats itself but nothing is the same, there is always an attempt to organize the material in a coherent whole so as to reach the potential meanings of the text. In order to do this, we must be mindful of what elements we place at the forefront and which ones at the background of our reading framework.

The aim of this paper is to trace the presence of apocalyptic imagery as it relates to globalization in two science fiction novels published in Chile during the last decade. For this purpose, I will highlight the manner in which globalization is represented in both novels, thus allowing me to identify its effect on national identity as well as on the viability of (social) emancipation and (individual) agency.

This essay pretends to discuss the way in which recent Argentinean novels such as En esa época or Planet, by Sergio Bizzio, describe a reality that rejects representation as a way to make patent a sociopolitical context signed by Neoliberal politics, allegorizing about the transformations of the public sphere caused by the crisis of political representation under Menem´s government

Juan Carlos Onetti’s Los adioses develops a fictional network that puts in game two strategic movements simultaneously. The first is retrospective and relates to writing: one is the narrator, who wants to discover the story of the basketball player, and the other it’s the meaning -the sense- that the narrator gives this story: why he appropriates the narrative material? and why the player is an interesting subject? The second strategic movement refers to reading and the empty of meaning that makes the text, which was crystallized in a particular use of language and in a singular form of access to knowledge: the impossibility of reading the truth.

The article analyses “Jacob y el otro”, short story by Juan Carlos Onetti according to anthropological tehories of René Girard. Onetti’s universe brims with different aspects of mimetic desire: This means that the relationship between the subject and the object is not direct: there is always a triangular relationship of subject, model, and object. Through the object, one is drawn to the model, whom Girard calls the mediator: it is in fact the model who is sought. My intention is only to comment some aspects of this theory in relation with the main triangle of desire in this story, which it is composed by Jacob, his manager Orsini and his pathetic objective of feeling himself the best wrestler in the World.

The cultural reflection that accompanied and that was based on Lezama’s literary work can be read as one of the most excellent transatlantic dialogues, ‘through-historical’ and ‘through-artistic’ established inside the Caribbean, because that “island different and indistinct at the same time in the cosmos”, where he always thought, is raised in his work as the center of a ‘trans-culture’s’ dynamic fabric that contributed to bring up to date a discourse of cultural identity which, in its own time, represented already a tradition where almost everything seemed to be told.

One of the main aspects in Jose Lezama Lima´s work is its barroquism.Nevertheless , hidden betweeen the lines and together with this obvious gongorism and barroquism we find the trail of the lives and works of the Carmelite mystics San Juan de la Cruz and Santa Teresa de Jesús. It is from this crossroad that is produced the confluence with the poetic work of authors such as Juan Ramón Jiménez or Jose Angel Valente, masters of the word ,mystics of nothingness.

Parting from José Lezama Lima’s complete works, this essay offers a new interpretation of the author’s poetic and reveals the significance of the audiovisual in the creative process of Literature followed by Lezama. In this way, this research provides evidence of how the cinema, television and radio clear up the meanings of Lezama’s Poetic System of the World, and become part of his poetic language.

From the opening moments of the Pre-Textos editorial America was considered. One of the primary objectives of all independent literary publishing house that is not indifferent to our language should be the necessary publicity about the vast panorama of Spanish literature in America. A panorama largely unknown in Spain in which there is no exchange of information between both sides. The principal propose of our editorial is to publish the best literature written in Spanish over the last thirty years in America. And this must be added the effort to integrate into our catalog the task of translation and the contribution to the understanding of those who speak Spanish.

This paper presents the problem of circulation of books in Spain and Latin America: in the fifties and sixties many editorials published in Spanish with the idea of getting to all the readers of the language, but from the eighties each country, because of various economics reasons, is enclosed within its own cultural borders. Since then, the clocks of the two sides of the Atlantic do not keep time for different reasons, and the clearest one is that there are physical limitations of the market that makes impossible the dream of crossing the ocean.

In this brief memoir about my experience as a Latin American student studying Romance Languages at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, I recollect about the difficulties of being there in the midst of the Franco dictatorship; but I also give testimony also about the immensely rich literary experience that opened up befote me: I was able to share closely with Dámaso Alonso, José Hierro, Vicente Aleixandre, Gerardo Diego, among many others; I was duly impressed by my colleague Luis Rafael Sánchez´s radiant personality, and I was able to follow in Rubén Darío´s footsteps in provincial Navalsauz, where the famous Nicaraguan poet lived with Francisca Sánchez.

This essay explores the virtual tour of Edgardo Rodríguez Juliá through San Juan, in relationship with its location at the Atlantic Ocean. In this way, San Juan, Memoir of a City results to profile itself as a city that, in the work of this author, conceives its semiotic constellation with the sea as an essential presence of redemption since its colonial history until our times. This characteristic is shared with other literatures of the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa, in its endeavor to overcome the consequences of its maritime links in the past for the contemporary hierarchies in its national cultures.

The narrative of the twenties in Latin America extends significantly the areas of fiction, by transforming the spaces in engines of narrative action and the material objects in its protagonists. The novels of Mexican Revolution works in this same direction, and the objects of modernity (trains, guns, planes etc.) form a universe where the relationship among men and reality of things is not merely utilitarian but extremely complex. This article seeks to examine some of the novels of the twenties to demonstrate how, next to the myth of the Revolution, they build an image of the Revolution as door of the Modernity, as the moment of passage between the XIXth Century and the new one.

An aphorism is an extremely brief prose of gnomic, non narrative and non fictional nature. To these defining features, we could add others plus contingent as its tendency to humor, wit, the surprise effect, the ellipse, or its passion for disagreeing. During the avant-garde, this discrepancy becomes lysergic and begins to subvert some of the traits that were supposedly essential. Against the efficacy of the classic aphorism, vanguards begin to build aphorisms from digressions, impossible logics, arbitrary images, moving into a new transgendered territory that drinks more than ever of poetry. Authors such as Fernández Moreno, Gómez de la Serna, Ramos Sucre, Juan Ramón or Bergamín gave the aphorism an unusual vitality and turned it into a new gadget.

Elena Garro, to which Borges defined as the “Tosltói of Mexico”, left us in Memories of Spain. 1937, a political and social testimony, a peculiar picture of the Spanish and foreign intellectuality, that one that went to II Congress the International of Antifascist Writers celebrated in 1937 between Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia and that tried to protest against the barbarism of a war without sense. It turns out stimulating to find a stamp clear than it was this country of cities broken in a so dramatic time and to verify that the vision of the Mexican young person, who declared itself like “anti nada”, is very next to that we found in Memory of the Melancholy of Maria Teresa León, Spanish, fighter, politically involved with the left.

For more than one and a half of a century, the authors of detective novel have proved their capacity to renew and adapt it to the needs and concerns of each society in various historical contexts. The detective novel largely enjoys great success in Latin American countries and on the Iberian Peninsula, as it offers an updated account of events that respond well to the economic, political and moral crises of the contemporary age. The detective novel has also managed to offer a critical analysis of the recent past in order to uncover the dysfunctions of modern day reality in the described region. This article is therefore an attempt to unravel the circumstances leading the writers from both sides of the Atlantic to write at the same time this contemporary narrative that is free from formal and generic constraints. Their aim is to offer the chronicle of societies plunged into deep disenchantment.

This paper seeks the legacy of Alejandra Pizarnik’s work in several contemporary Spanish poets. The aim of this article is to analyze the symbolic codes related to self-representation, such as self-statement (the presence of the authoress’ name) or certain postmodern rhetoric strategies (self-dissolution, psychic dissociation, schizophrenic writing). The stages of Pizarnik’s poetry are reflected in the discourse modes of recent Spanish poetry, which is based on a blurred self and an identity in progress.

The poetry of Pizarnik plans as the shadow of an airplane over the landscape of certain transatlantic poetic traditions: the post-humanist and the neo-romantic. It may be said, however, that its incidence has been higher in a specific region: poetry written by women. What left the poetry of Pizarnik in Argentine women poets who began publishing after his death? What was her reception and her presence? We will attend to these issues, stopping in a romantic myth (the double) and in a character (Alice in Wonderland), both of European origin and very fruitful in the field of Argentinean literature.

This article locates Pizarnik in communication with theories and artistics movements actives in the twentieth century. Pizarnik production is linked to the antidoxa´s space from two key moments of the aesthetic theory of Kant, synthesized by Cauquelin and placed in relation to contemporary art. The dynamics of rupture that runs Pizarnik reduces production elements of Kantian aesthetics, trustee of the doxa in characterizing antidóxicos elements. The grid structure, a paradigm of modern aesthetics, streamlines the texts of the author and paradoxical component increases.

This essay explores how Rio de la Plata writers, from the postdictatorship generation (i.e., those born in the 70s and 80s), relate with the political context of revolution and repression in which they grew up, and how such relationship affects their political perspectives as young adults. Throughout the reflection I interweave the perspective of sociologist Emilio De Ípola in his article “Un legado trunco” and the analysis of three short stories written by, and about, postdictatorship generation’s members: Florencia Abbate’s “El grito” (2004), Gabriel Sosa’s “Qué difícil es ser de izquierda en estos días” (2004) and “Los cuatro fantásticos” (2005) by Fabián Casas. These stories address the experience of sons and daughters of political activists who were exiled, imprisoned, or disappeared during the last dictatorship, from the context of the new millennium.

This article invites to revisit César Vallejo’s play La piedra cansada, situating it in the context of avant-garde and indigenist discourse of the 1930s and interpreting it from the author’s own Marxist point of view. Given that the material base determines the ideological and aesthetic superstructure, the economic reorganization of production processes represented by the play reflects the reorganization (or re-humanization) of American “nueva poesía” that modifies Ortega y Gasset’s paradigm of de-humanized modern arts and leads to a process of vernacularization of aesthetic discourses.

Gamaliel Churata (1897-1969), the main promoter of Orkopata Group and director of the vanguard magazine Boletín Titikaka (1926-1930), was distinguished as indigenista fiction writer. This article compares two similar narrative sequences, “El kamilli”, 1929, and “Mama Kuka”, the central chapter of El pez de oro, 1957, to observe the crisis in the indigenismo proposal, both aesthetic practice and political discourse, based on understanding and incorporating the other to a homogeneous nation project. Against this model, in which he participated in the twenties, in his major work Churata chooses taking practices and structures of Andean thought to dislocate the literary discourse and compel, in permanent tension, to the reciprocity.

The text outlines a mobile genealogy of andean critical and literary thinking from these books to understand its complexities in the birth of the project Cuzco Paqarina, which I propose as a category of analysis that would replace the of the so-called "Indigenismo Cuzqueño".

This article explores the paradigmatic figure of poet José Varallanos within the Peruvian avant-garde movement. Varallanos searched to define, and even to represent, the Andean population, usually described under a homogenizing identity, as “indigenous”. Varallanos’ texts will lead us through the construction of a native discourse in indigenista’s poetry and painting. His texts will also help us to analyze some of the techniques through which that construction turns to be a self-representation of an emerging intellectual class rather than an image of the Andean population Varallanos and other intellectuals pretended to define.

Lino Novás Calvo published several short stories and poems as a result of his experience of the Spanish Civil War, but his journalist work is particularly interesting. He was one of the most prolific Spanish American journalists on the conflict, and wrote at least a hundred and fifty texts about the war while he was in Spain, which were published on both sides of the Atlantic. Although they have received little critical attention, the analysis of these documents (in this case, those published between October 1936 and October 1937 in the weekly magazine Ayuda) is doubly revealing: it shows the closeness of the chronicles to the world of literature and also, along with the author’s unquestionable political commitment, the persistence in his writing of an aesthetic quest.

The article analyses the transformation process of the image of the cultural other in relation to Latin American and Spanish intellectuals during the Spanish Civil War. This new configuration of the cultural imaginary, which in that period is linked to political positioning, is also the result of the cultural history of transatlantic relations in the cultural field. For this reason, the article examines two historical moments of the cultural imaginary (in the 19th and the early 20th century) and studies key factors in the new image of the intellectual and his or her others. The idea of a cultural space able to transcend national frontiers and the image of Madrid at war as a pole of rebinding are central in the new configuration of the intellectual’s image.

Federico García Lorca’s death provoked the reaction of many Peruvian intellectuals. Their response can be followed in both the official and the clandestine press. Moreover, works of prose, poetry and even letters were written in order to condemn the cruel homicide. These literary pieces usually explicit the Peruvian support to the Spanish Republic, despite the dictatorial repression suffered in the Andean country.

The years that Pablo Neruda lived in Spain were, undoubtedly, decisive in his poetic development and in his future evolution as a poet closely committed to the social demands of Spanish America. His contact and collaboration with members of the “Generación del 27”, in a moment of great historical relevance for the destiny both of Spain and Europe, led to an important dialogue between poetics from both sides of the Atlantic and to the forming of what critics have defined as “Hispanic Surrealism”. From a transatlantic critical perspective, the article analyses this relationship and provides a basis for various complementary lines of research.

Intermedialidad
Omnisciencia
In the show Boris Godunov, La FuradelsBaus revisits the October, 2002 hostage that was carried out in a Moscow theater by Chechen rebels. As in the historic episode, the public is assailed during the show by people (characters?) with weapons who initiate negotiations throughout the performance, to realize their political demands. In this reconstruction of an episode based on real events (but itself subject to political manipulation due to the mass media having covered the event and transmitting the information), the professionals of the fiction who are the artists of La Fura intend to question this reality and the way it passes through a web of mediations to reach each one of us. To this end, the show resorts to the intermediality, which allows it to increase the traditional scenic space of the play by including the area of the spectators, the wings and corridors of the theater, a television studio set…, and to multiply the levels of fiction, creating a healthy blurring between the domains of reality and fiction. So, live images and mediated statements get involved in the interplay between the actors and the public, multiplying points of view to make the ocularization – and thus the access to the truth – as completeas possible. This paper examines in what this research of zero focus by the recourse to the intermediality, which aims at the spectatorial omniscience, is put in the service of a political aim – that of warning against media manipulation –; it also questions, in this context, the function of the theater itself –can it for example, avoid the traps of television mediation?

The writing called « jam » is a literary improvisation changed into a social event where authors, readers and other artists from different areas are gathered together. In 2007, Adrián Hudowski, writer and scriptwriter, organised the first writing “jam” in Argentina, joining literature, music and graphic art. Keeping in mind this new kind of creative performance, we will try to solve some principles resulting from this new genre. This manner offers substantial change with due respect to the author, the reader but also the work. From this point, we will try to know if the fictional genre changes itself in order to come close to other literary genres, if the technological influence opens new boundaries and if so, which ones. On the other hand, we will be interested by one crucial element in those events: the screen. Of course, not only the screen is an essential component for this exercise, but also in its relationship between the author and the reader, the author and the text, and the text and the public. Besides its material aspect, this element develops a thematic function and turns into a literary and social symbol. As a matter of fact, this view offers a starting point for a reflection about the contemporary fiction.

The paper aims to analyse some tendencies in experimental poetry after the contemporary concept of ICT, considering how it has been used in literary scholarship. Such notions as simultaneity, reciprocity or publicity emerged in the 1960s as landmarks for the upcoming creative methods in poetry. Thanks to other concepts that have been used in most contemporary scholarship, such as poetic document, archive or redescription, one can discern a somehow longer chronology in the field of creation, previous to the digital era, in order to examine past works and events with the utmost practical and theoretical tools.

The experimental movement of visual poetry was born in Spain in the 60s. For this movement, traditional poetry is dying for its lack of movility in the space of the page and the book. To free it, and to show that poetry is above all an act, visual poets created - and still create - poems under many different forms in many different places, from the textual arrangement change in the space of the page, to the street performance in public places, including the graffiti on a wall or the humorous drawing on a computer screen. In other words, the main feature of the visual poem is its iconicity. Hence, the importance of its material support, as in any visual work of art. We also know that traditional poetry is characterized by staging its own support: language. Now, in the case of visual poetry, the support, in its most concrete materiality, is also staged and generates meaning in the poem. We intend to study this semiotic importance of the material support in the visual poem, especially with new technologies.

At the crossroads between life and work in Julio Cortázar, I aim to examine through the figure of the journey, that tension, that rhythm, that extends from the same to the other. So I read critically not only in the materiality or imaginary or fictional realization of the trip, but also their productive function as discursive operator and narrative scheme; the journey as a way of looking and characterization of a question to confront an enigma that attracts the desire to search. The transit of journey, of life, of writing and / or reading, are not perpetual movements, they are interrupted by stops. The nomadism of Julio Cortázar entails the requirement to locate stations where restorative refuge is sought, the life meant as transit is an interval between two eternal infinities, but while the fate of death is unavoidable, it is not a constant movement , there are stays in the dwellings that, from time to time, put a stop to the wanderings. There’s Cortázar that reads and writes from different positions: critic, teacher, theorist, translator, narrator and poet, among other intermediate variants; this positions has different specificities and takes varied intensity according to each instance of his life. The periodization that divides the life and work of Julio Cortázar in six stages, is a critical approach that I intend to tackle with his poetics from a different perspective, considering the journeys and the various functionalities of the operations of reading and writing that characterized each period. My proposal to deal with the work and life in Julio Cortázar as a crossroads divided into six periods are primarily intended to establish axes around which it is possible to approach a certain differential specificity that characterizes each of them, both transits, journeys and writing, as well as the stays, the volumes of his work and the creation of librarie

The city of Paris was always a sacralized place by Julio Cortázar from his adolescence in Argentina. From when he was young he always felt attracted to its streets and cultural references. That effect was consolidated after his first trip to Paris in the decade of the fifties and even more since his settlement in the French city. The article deals with the areas of Paris that Julio Cortázar mythologized through his stories and novels, the spaces that are scenes in his literature.

This work reflects on some of the consequences of the Parisian residence of Julio Cortázar. We briefly address how was accepted, or criticized, this decision to go to Paris in 1951. This voluntary exile was considered, by some, a betrayal of the national commitment required of the Latin Americans authors. Reflecting on what might be some of the signs of such "argentinidad", we end up concluding how the option to live in this European country, looking the Latin American’s reality "from afar", is, in fact, a radically coherent choice with the versatile Argentine identity and its need for questioning and search.

Poetry and architecture are arts aspiring to a poetic, or rather sharing a purpose that transcends in ethical and aesthetic terms its merely disciplinary field; a goal that requires them to go far beyond the particular object of his artistic production: the poem and the building. This article undertakes an inquiry into the poetic as an aim not only of poetry, but also of architecture. It also studies how the image acts on them. Within it, it is explained how the poetic and architectural fields image can and should pile up to achieve the most appropriate environment built for the spirit of man.

This paper proposes a reading of the novel Color del verano of Reinaldo Arenas from the significance of the institution of the labyrinth defined by Gustav René Hocke and also from Franz Kafka poetic, the great “constructor” of labyrinthine and extravagant universes. Hocke interprets literature within the Mannerist tradition, whose maximum expression is found in modern literature, built on the basis of the wandering labyrinthine principle. And precisely these coordinates that complement themselves, both at the level of significance and at the narrative level, will guide our reading of the text of Arenas in which we discover the background that Hocke finds at the root of Mannerist expression: the mythological tension between the daedalic and dionysiac principle that then allows to understand all the labyrinthine as an essential image of the being endowed with an ambivalent or tragicomic character. We will also focus, on one hand, in the labyrinthine construction of fictional entities within the framework of oppositional schemes, typical of the archiestructura of the Myth: inside/outside, encounter/dis-encounter, splitting, etc. On the other hand, we will focus the transformation of that structure in the modern myth represented as a hybrid world, as it appears in the narrative of Kafka.

This research approaches the link between travel and translation with the purpose of describing the operations of reading and appropriation that Rubén Darío establishes in Los raros (1896) and that are later projected to other sections of his travel writing. The hypothesis that will be analyzed holds that Darío’s library navigation disrupts the paradigm of the “gentleman writer”, one of the hegemonic models for travel and translation at the fin de siècle. By placing emphasis on the correlative figures of the “importer” and the “lettered translator” –representations implied on discussions about national identities- recent criticism has minimized the visibility of an emerging translator at the fin de siècle, who is disputing his own legitimacy within that normative horizon. Through the analysis of the prologue that General Mitre wrote to his translation of the Divine Comedy (“Teoría del traductor”, 1899), Darío’s reception of that version in “Una nueva traducción del Dante” (1895) and the sketches in Los raros, alternatives are presented to overcome that resistance.

This paper examines the location of the author in Borges' oeuvre. Classifying the locations of the expression of this figure is the first goal, the second being to provide a periodization of the public construction of the author in Borges case.

This essay explores an aspect of the uses made of Thomas De Quincey as source of legitimacy for Borges’s “creative project”, in particular for the writing of fiction in his classical stage (1940s). We can call this aspect “the question of textual intoxication”. The paper evaluates the fact that in Borges the image of De Quincey as a writer appears without reference to opium, an element undoubtedly central for De Quincey. Considering De Quincey’s intoxicated text, it offers some notes for a rereading of what Ana María Barrenechea called, at the beginning of the beat age, the “unreality” of Borges’s work. As part of the same task, it previously describes De Quincey’s “narcotization of romanticism”, which can be read in the references of Confessions of an English Opium Eater; being an Extract from de Life of a Scholar (1821) to Biographia Literaria (1817) by S. T. Coleridge. This procedure is fundamental for an understanding of the image of the writer as “Opium-Eater”, and of the meaning which De Quincey assigned to the word “literature” in other texts.

How to legitimize an art that rejects tradition to authorize its practice? How to support it when this refuses the institutionalization process while recognizes itself as artistic? Avant-garde nature disrupts the traditional legitimacy because its autonomy divorces them from any heteronomous law. Thus, solving the tension between autonomy and legitimacy has been the unavoidable challenge that faced each avant-garde that committed to update art when History twisted its course. From the case of Argentinean invencionism, and a characterization of avant-garde that connects its occurrence with particular historical conditions, this study analyzes three mechanisms alternative to tradition, that avant-garde movements display to legitimate as artistic expressions and authorizes its practice: the interdisciplinary bonds, the construction of new genealogies, and the group grounds.

In this article I examine the place Pascal Casanova assigned to the work of Octavio Paz in his book on the world literary space, The World Republic of Letters (1999). First, I refute Casanova’s claims regarding the ways in which Paz creates the “symbolic capital” that allowed him access to the metropolitan cultural centers. I then explore the place of enunciation from which Paz establishes his relationship with the literary tradition of the West through a brief review of Children of Mire and the introductory devices used in his Collected Works. Finally, I propose a new approach to the study of how the Mexican writer’s work unfolds in the world literary space. This approach draws from two concepts that are rooted in postcolonial theory: the concept of “appropriation” and “provincialization of Europe”.

The aim of this communication is focused in analysing the origins of the relation between politics and literature in the thought shaping of this Granada’s writer and sociologist in his period before working as a lawyer in the courts of the Spanish Republic. As an undergraduate, Ayala was not only soaked in strictly literary readings, but he was carefully studying the writings of Marx, Proudhon, Stimer, Georges Sorel, Nietzche and Schopenhauer. Besides, he engaged heavily in the secret meetings of the Federación Universitaria Escolar and the Unión Liberal de Estudiantes, catalyst associations of the youth intellectuals’ rejection against Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship.

Historians of Spanish Literary Criticism have often used the terms “los dos Alonsos” to briefly refer, not only to Dámaso and Amado Alonso, but to the whole tendency to stylistic idealism that was dominant in almost all the Hispanic field between the fourties and the sixties of the twentieth century. Even recognising that the terms are clearly unfair regarding the specific qualities of each author’s work, in this paper we will explore the reasons of its success; the background unity of both critics, in terms of their philosophy of language but also of their politics, using on this regard the notion of “intimacy” as it was established by José Luis Pardo (1998).

However, it is possible to draw other consequences of these relationships between culture and movement. There is a system of relations between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean that leads to transformations of cultural order that Benitez Rojo perceives and describes in his essay.

The aim of this paper is focused in analysing the practice of reading in the Cervantine novel, through the study of the interpretative practices of the readers depicted by the author in the novel. We can define these groups of characters as interpretive communities, following the definition given by Stanley Fish within the reader-oriented literary criticism. These historically and socially determined communities, with their own appropriation and comprehension mechanisms, usually apply, spread and establish as “normal” a particular interpretation that cannot overlook the limitations of a legitimate and no-arbitrary reading.

This article focuses on the politics of literature and political aesthetics, in light of the literary theories of Jacques Ranciere, with an analysis of the chapter “La parte de los crímenes”, featured in 2666 (2004), written by Roberto Bolaño. This work can be read as a literary form of the “Femicide theory”. This concept, coined by Jill Radford and Diana Russel, has been adopted and developed by Latin-American academics, who grant it its present global status. In support of these theories, an analysis of Roberto Bolaños literary corpus is made, detailing the essential characteristics and methods with which the literary text gives a specific gender perspective to the book.

This article aims to examine how the cuban writer Antón Arrufat (1935) understands the relationship between time, revolution and subjectivity in his first novel, Mi antagonista (1963). We propose that if the State discourse imagines revolution as the inaugural page of a history to be written by a new man, Arrufat, on the contrary, conceives it as a work of rewriting, as an experimentation to be done by the heir with the materials of his inheritance. The novel studied here suggests that this rewriting work transforms and renew not only the inheritance but the heir himself, given that he was already inscribed in that legacy.

A theoretical approach to the poetry of David Rosenmann-Taubbegins with a formalist analysis that provides the reader with a basic understanding of the poem. It then incorporates Paul Ricoeur’shermeneutical strategies, such as the search for traces of unobservable phenomena that lie outside the text, the use of the imagination, exemplification through metaphorical representation and the reader’sintegration of the text with his or her lived experience, to extendand expand that understanding. This two-pronged approach is appliedto the study of one of Rosenmann-Taub’s poems, with the goalof accessing the profound personal and multidimensional meanings inscribed in his opus.

In this sense, without losing his own independence,it is unrolled and developed in an evidently poetical space. In this article we study Biblical rewritings in the work of Borges, starting from what we propose to conceive as a series of texts which we call “cuentos de sacrificio”.This series consists of those stories that can be read in a hypertextual relationship to the Gospel accounts of the Passion of Christ, a topic that, beyond occasional remarks, has not been systematically examined by the critic. Borges himself said that the story of “un dios que se hace sacrificar en el Gólgota”, as told in the Gospels, is one of the few stories that men have always repeated (“Elevangelio según Marcos”, 1970). In this paper we propose, as part of an ongoing investigation, the productivity of the notion of “sacrificial mechanism” –as it has been developed, fundamentally, by René Girard– for reading these “cuentos desacrificio”, and present an analysis of the story that opens this series: “Tema deltraidor y del héroe” (1944).

Something strange happens with time in the work of the so-called Generation Zero. Time speeds up or slows down, and sometimes it stops completely, allowing for the introduction of speculative elements. In these narratives, time is something other than real(ist) time. I argue that the existence of multiple temporalities in fiction by Generation Zero writers represents an explicit attempt to create a temporal space in contrast with that of the dominant temporality. In the stories by Raúl Flores and Jorge Enrique Lage that this essay analyzes, these divergent temporalities offer an exit from the national space and the narratives that dominate it.

Is Post-Dictatorial Fiction Emerging in Cuba?

This article proposes a new reading of Cuban contemporary fiction produced by the writers of Generation Zero from the framework of trauma and memory studies in literature. Taking Idelber Avelar’s framework of post-dictatorial fictions in Latin American as point of departure, the essay suggests a relation between some recent Cuban government policies directed at a transition towards a neoliberal, capitalistic economic model, a process which has consequentially lead to the erosion of a memory of human rights violations and totalitarianism by the state. With this goal, the essay describes common themes and narrative devices in the work of Generation Zero writers to show how this fiction allegorizes the historical traumas lived in Cuba after 1959.

The essay relates Juan Abreu’s Garbageland (2001) and Jorge E. Lage’s La autopista: The Movie (2014) in order to examine their inscription in the generic coordinates of cyberpunk or science fiction and their readings of the literary and cultural Cuban archive. Some symbolic strategies in Abreu’s Garbageland nourish the repertoire of an identitarian exceptionalism. Lage’s La autopista... carries out deflationary gestures that question this exceptionalism and the oracular and allegorical drive of cyberpunk and science fiction, present not only in Abreu’s novel, but also in other texts of the Cuban cyberpunk.

Argentina has played an important role in the construction Federico García Lorca’s memory, in the dissemination and legitimacy of his works, in the political −and international− complaint of his murder and disap¬pearance. It is not a memory but memories, that construct images of the poet and playwright. This article aims at analyzing García Lorca’s legacy between 2010 and 2015. Focused on Federico García Lorca’s presence as a character in Argentine’s theatre of recent years, this article intends to make a first approach to the phenomenon of “presentification of García Lorca” in Buenos Aires theatre with the aim of exploring cultural relation¬ship between Spain, Argentina and South America through the wounds the Spanish Civil War and the Latin American dictatorships left in these societies.

We propose to study the epistolary exchange between two Spanish personalities of the early twentieth century. Although not very well known up to now, Natalio Rivas, politician and José Mora Guarnido, journalist, politician and writer exiled in Uruguay in 1923, helped to draw the cultural and political scene of the time by allowing the circulation of ideas from one continent to the other through their letters. The corpus is archived in the José Mora Guarnido Fund, conserved in the University of Lille in France.

At the time of the documented investigations that for years have besieged the figure of Federico García Lorca, this work seeks to rescue, through two biographical books, two intimate voices: that of Federico’s brother, Francisco García Lorca, and that of José Mora Guarnido, friend of the poet’s youth. The biographies prioritize the familiar look in the surroundings of Granada, the admiration for the character, the pain of sacrifice and not only speak of the biography but above all of the biographers who write them.

Ten years after the creation of a great number of writers’ blogs, the aim of this paper is to assess the use made of this medium by a dozen Spanish writers. It analyses the impact of such blogs on the process of cultural recognition, their potential as a tool for literary creation and their similarities, as well as their differences, with private diaries.

This paper analyzes hoy Postmodernism has not meant the total death of the author, as Poststructuralisms had once certified, but his/her mutation into new forms of presenciality, from TV to social networks. Some examples are proposed which show the continuities and changes from appearances of writers on TV during the 70s and 80s, and the current use of blogs or personal profiles in social networks such as Facebook. These cases reveal how literature’s place in everyday culture has changed. But it also shows the adaptation of writers, halfway between the business management of their own image and the conversion of this management in a literary matter.

In a highly vectorized environment of transcultural intersections such as Latin America, a transarea philology can achieve pioneering results that contribute to analyzing critically the residues, partly racist, of the nationalist philologies founded in the 19th century, in order to get rid of from them. The knowledge stored in the literatures of the world can surely serve as a corrective for patterns of perception limited by the disciplines and highlight the questions that will be formulated from the transdisciplinary point of view. Starting from there, this article aims to analyze how Latin America could be thought of between Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania, so that it results, in the sense of fundamental research, a new interpretation of the transarea relations.

Contemporary thought is a major source of figures developed by neo-Baroque tradition (particularly Eugeni d’Ors and his Latin-American followers) as well as Contemporary Aesthetics is also a reference for History to come. The power of fiction is this power to give the figure to this figurelessness, which is the realm of every figure.

The Failure of Latin America
El fracaso de Latinoamérica
Beverley, John

Latin America

Latin America is a failed civilization. Failed in relation to what? Failed in relation to China and India in particular, in the period that extends from the end of World War two to the present. If in 1945, Latin America as a whole, especially Brazil, Argentina and the Southern Cone, and Mexico, was somewhat ahead of China and India, it is now clearly behind, in terms of demographic and economic growth, on the one hand, and status or influence in the world, on the other. This failure can be observed in seven topics: the question of coloniality, the role of the United States, Catholicism, the Baroque as a cultural signifier for Latin America, the nation-state, Socialism, and the Hispanic or Latino community in the United States.

This article proposes, in the first place, a reflection on the terms from which humanism is recovered by Sloterdijk, as one of the key elements for the diagnosis of Postmodernity. Secondly, it focuses on Sloterdijk’s biopolitical ideas about the social immunity and anthropogenesis, which is a topic related to the idea of posthumanism. With these objectives, the propositions of Sloterdijk are connected with the series of some points related to the role of humanism in the articulation of post-colonial societies with the new global (dis)order. This topic is crucial for the redefinition of intellectual projects in the 21st century.

Blogs in the Spanish-language writings: retrospective of the literary hoax at the beginning of the 21st century

The creation of fictional characters in online social media has led to a systematic exploitation of resources that enable these characters to occupy spheres and spaces of presence. Authors hand these digital resources over to their avatar personae, so that the masks used in the virtual scene remove them from the spotlight and hide them –as writers– away from the digital identity they have created. In blogfiction developed within social networks or blogs, thistransfer to the blog-characters is fused with the total impersonation of the author, in a process that is essentially a hoax, and that leads to the creation of long stories or purely atomistic roles. In these, the creation and embodiment of the characters is the ultimate goal, even above narratorial developments. Thus emerge blogfictions that channel the acting drive of the authors to create characters that border on the implausible and that force the covenants of fiction established with the recipients of their work. In this article, we analyse the online antecedents of this phenomenon of bloggers’ impersonations by means of their avatars and how they become a narrative device in those digital literary spaces linked to the blog. This article also discusses the intermedia path that this phenomenon has followed and the evolution of its format, a process parallel to the Social Network, with a particular focus on writings in Spanish.

Literature after literature: theory and praxis of the postliterary verbal art in the 21st century

21st century literature
post-contemporary aesthetics.
A series of attempts has occurred since the beginning of the new century in the light of a mutant poetics of the literature, which requires an approach from perspectives different to the usual one. Such approaches break and do not come to term most of the time with the principles coming from the literary modernity and whose origin we find in Aristotelian Poetics. However, the sign of a new literary age is not only regarded from the mutant avant-garde: the narrative by Pilar Adón or Julio José Ordovás, despite of its conventional aspect, are equally examples of a new conceptual consolidation of the writing as verbal art beyond the literary idea. This new poetic concept is characterized by clearly breaking the usual poetic norm and responding to an alternative model of criticism. Therefore, the objective of this article is to highlight the main avatars and dilemmas that affect criticism today in order to analyse the drift of the theory and practice of literature in the 21st century.

A Transition from Urgency to Memory: Carlos María de Vallejo and the Spanish Civil War

Spanish civil war.
Although Carlos María de Vallejo’s romances Mapa de España and Piel de Toro represent an everlasting political commitment to the Second Spanish Republic, both of them, along with the Uruguayan author, have eventually fallen into oblivion. The following article aims at vindicating Vallejo’s political work on the Spanish Civil War in order to rekindle the anti- fascist crusade propelled by the Uruguayan consul. First of all, an analysis of the time’s political conjuncture will be necessary to explain the author’s adoption of a pseudonym. Then, a thorough examination of the romance’s first version, Mapa de España (1938) will epitomize the archetypal characteristics of the romance of war. Finally, a comparison of the two versions will help explain romance’s transition from urgency to memory.

This paper presents and interprets a collection of data related to the publication and dissemination of the current Spanish-American narrative in Spain between 2009 and 2018. With support in the methodology of distant reading proposed by Franco Moretti and in theoretical reflections on the relationship between crisis and literature, the essay investigates the eventual consequence of the last global economic crisis in the reconfiguration of the literary field, in contrast to the situation during the first decade of the 21st century. For this, it has been useful the lists of some of the most conspicuous literary awards; dossiers and monographs published in three specialized Spanish magazines (Ínsula, Cuadernos Hispanoamericanos and Quimera) and in cultural supplements of three Spanish newspapers (El Cultural, de El Mundo; Babelia, de El País, and ABC Cultural); numerous declarations of agents involved in the Spanish-American peninsular field, as well as and the content of ten anthologies published in the period and catalogues of publishing house Literatura Random House in order to perceive the transatlantic implication of the phenomenon.

This article examines a set of Uruguayan magazines first published as a local response to the dangers of German National Socialist progress during the Second World War. Starting from plot theory as a world fiction in force at the time (Louis 2007) and the debates of the national political context, it analyzes the representation and uses of the Nazi threat that these publications exhibit. The work highlights the ways in which these magazines collaborated with the hybridization of the imaginary of Nazism and the dissemination of a narrative of fear and suspicion. Moreover, the study of these “anti-Nazi” publications allows us to shed light on individual intellectual paths and sketch the continuity of a network of Uruguayan anti-fascist writers forged during the 1930s under the experience of Terra’s dictatorship and the adherence to the cause of Republican Spain.
