Aim. The main aim of this review article is to provide information like advantages of protein and peptides via different routes of drug administration, targeted to a particular site and its implication in drug delivery system. Methods. To that aim, from the web sites of PubMed, HCAplus, Thomson, and Registry were used as the main sources to perform the search for the most significant research articles published on the subject. The information was then carefully analyzed, highlighting the most important results in the development of protein and peptide drug targeting as well as its therapeutic activity. Results. In recent years many researchers use protein and peptide as a target site of drug by a different delivery system. Proteins and peptides are used as specific and effective therapeutic agents, due to instability and side effects their use is complicated. Protein kinases are important regulators of most, if not all, biological processes. Abnormal activity of proteins and peptides has been implicated in many human diseases, such as diabetes, cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Conclusions. It is concluded that the protein and peptide were used in drug targeting to specific site and also used in different diseased states like cancer, diabetes, immunomodulating, neurodegenerative effects and antimicrobial activity.
Therapy is a branch of health science that deals with the means used and the manner of application in the treatment of diseases in order to relieve symptoms or produce a cure. Today there are many therapeutic tools available to combat the diverse health problems faced daily. With this evolution of medicine, it is inevitable that more and better strategies emerge leading to a more innovative therapeutic spectrum. Within the new strategies, we find that gene therapy is currently one with most potential. This type of therapy is based on using genetic material as an active substance against various pathologies and it is on which this literary review is focused. With the high demand for systems that vehiculize genetic material, diverse forms of carrying said material have emerged in the past decade. One of these forms consists of the use of non-viral vectors. The non-viral vectors act as transfectants that evade problems inherent to the use of viral structures such as immunological reactions. Polyethylenimine has emerged as the most promising polymer in this field for many reasons which will be illustrated in this paper. The objectives of this review are to give the reader an understanding of what Polyethylenimine is, why it has produced so much interest today in gene therapy, and what its applications are, with special emphasis on cancer treatment.

Aim: The present work was aimed to formulate and evaluate osmotic pump delivery system of Ibuprofen to provide a uniform concentration of drug at the absorption site and thereby maintain the plasma concentration within therapeutic range, which minimizes side effects and reduces the frequency of administration.Material and Methods: In the present work, 5 formulations (F1 to F5)of Ibuprofen osmotic drug delivery systems(ODDS) were prepared using two osmogens (NaCl and KCL) in two concentrations and a control F6 (without osmogens) by wet granulation technique. The excipients used in this study did not alter physicochemical properties of the drug, as tested by FTIR. Prior to compression, the prepared granules were evaluated for flow and compression characteristics. After compression, the tablets were evaluated for hardness, thickness, weight variation, friability, percentage of weight gain, drug content, in vitro release and stability studies. Results: The results revealed that the pre-compression and post-compression parameters are within the limits. Among all the formulations, F3 showed a controlled drug release of 63.54% at the end of 10th hour. The results of optimized formulation (F3) subjected to stability studies for 60 days at 27º±2ºC/60 ± 5% RH and 50º±2ºC/75 ± 5% RH showed that there was no significant change in the drug content and percentage drug release and the product was stable even after 2 months. Conclusions: From the study, it was concluded that Ibuprofen osmotic pump tablet prepared with potassium chloride (10%) as osmogent and cellulose acetate as coating polymer may be considered as a suitable alternative to currently available formulations of Ibuprofen.

Aims: Salt formation of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) improve their aqueous solubility, processing at industrial level, safety aspects and sometimes biological properties. The aim of the present review is to consider ionic liquids (ILs) based active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) as an alternative versatile tool in the pharmaceutical industry.Materials and Methods: ILs are the quaternary salts having melting point below 100 oC. The negative side effects of a given API can be treated by delivering it as an ionic liquid in which the counterion neutralizes the unwanted side effects. Ionic liquid form such as APIs pair for dual treatment therapies with synergistic rather than additive results is another approach. Recently, a major emphasis has been placed on ionic liquids as bearers of desired biological activity. In this context, the properties of the Ionic liquids can be tuned by judicious choice of cation(s) and anion(s).Results: Recent developments have shown that Ionic liquids have potential biological applications in drug delivery, particularly as APIs. Some examples of ionic liquids produced as APIs are described from literature which has at least one pharmaceutical active ion with improved biological activity over the precursor ions. The use of ionogels in sensing platforms clearly has several advantages over current technologies. ILs have considerable potential to provide advances in liquid formulation of protein pharmaceuticals. Conclusions: Pharmaceutical ionic liquids could provide another tool in drug development, design and delivery. Ionic liquid salts as APIs eliminate problems associated with the solid-state and exhibit synergistic physical and biological properties.

Objectives: The aim is to study the evolution of quality requirements in the application file for approval of drug products and their relationship with the quality of industrially manufactured drugs between 1850 and 1950, taking into account the influence of political and social context.Materials and methods: Analysis of the legislation published in Spain referring to pharmaceutical registration from 1850 to 1950, comparing the quality benchmarks to highlight the improvement. Search of information in journals and unpublished documents. Discussion on quality progress related to the socio-political context of the country. Results and conclusions: Until 1855 drugs did not exist as such, there were only secret remedies. The Law of November 28, 1855 established the obligation to declare the remedies to the Health Authority. Since then there was an evolution until the Royal Decree of 1919 established the official register of medicines and assigned a registration number to each medicine. The Royal Decree of 1924 updated the 1919 Decree but no advance was done referring to quality. Then a period of stagnation followed in both the rules of registration and the quality due to the civil war and the international blockade. A Law Reform was announced in 1944 but it took a long time to be done. Summarizing: It was a long period, with advances in organization and little progress in quality requirements in the pharmaceutical registration. When quality requirements increased, drug quality also did. Application files for registration are an essential reference to know the quality at some time.

Objectives: The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the influence of solid dispersion of pH dependent and pH independent Eudragit polymers on the sustained release metformin hydrochloride matrix tablets.Materials and methods: Matrix formulations were prepared by direct compression techniques. The excipients used in this study did not alter physicochemical properties of the drug, as tested by FTIR and DSC. All the batches were evaluated various physical parameters. The in vitro drug dissolution and SEM studies were also carried out. Mean dissolution time is used to characterize drug release rate from a dosage form. Results and discussion: Among the different examined polymer blends, Eudragit RLPO with S100 and Ll00 matrix tablets based on solid dispersion showed highly sustained release pattern. Kinetic modeling of in vitro dissolution profiles revealed the drug release mechanism ranges from diffusion controlled to anomalous type. Conclusions: Fitting the data to Korsmeyer equation indicated that diffusion along with erosion could be the mechanism of drug release.

The Botanical Garden of Havana, founded in 1817, was an institution designed at the beginning as a centre for the study, classification and analysis of existing plants on the island, using the acquired knowledge to improve crop profitability. Progressively, it would take shape as an institution linked to the scientific world, where the study of Botany, essential in many fields of study such as that of Pharmacy, would be established. The Garden underwent its closest bond with Pharmacy under the direction of Pedro Alejandro Auber, which would lend special importance to Botany from a pharmaceutical point of view, focusing on the creation of a Cuban Flora. Subsequently, the Garden would be directed by various institutions until it became part of the university, where Botany would be part of the curriculum in several schools, such as the School of Pharmacy, where it was a key subject in pharmaceutical education. The aim was to delve into the study of Botany during the nineteenth century emphasizing its closest link to Pharmacy, using the history of the Botanical Garden in Havana as a connecting thread. We try to gather more specific pharmaceutical and medical information about the island’s Botany and to establish a chronology of how the study of this matter evolves throughout the century using bibliographic and archive sources.

Vaginitis is one of the most common gynecological problems diagnosed by primary care physicians. In this article we wanted to describe the different types of vaginitis, their symptoms and the different drug treatments. The presence of recurrent episodes and the re-exposure to antibiotics can cause adverse reactions and suggesting the need for alternative treatment.Numerous studies propose the use of probiotics for the treatment of this pathology basing on the regulatory capacity that probiotics have on the vaginal microbiota. This capacity is due to the ability to maintain vaginal pH ≤ 4.5, the production of biosurfactants and blocking adhesion of uropathogens. The fact that the colonization of the genitourinary tract is faster when probiotics are administered vaginally suggesting that this kind of administration could have a lot of advantages.

Arterial hypertension (AH) is an important health-related problem, as responsible for an important part of cardiovascular disorders. Moreover, AH is related to the development and progression of organ damage, which has indeed a negative influence in the cardiovascular prognosis of the individual. In Spain, AH is a frequent condition, affecting about 10 millions of the adult population.Due to their accessibility and specific background on drug management, the community pharmacist could play a key role in the detection and follow-up of the hypertensive patient. To date, several guidelines on hypertension management have been released, although almost invariably have been addressed to the medical community. However, it has become more evident the need for a global management of hypertension and cardiovascular risk with the participation of several health-care providers, such as pharmacists and nurses, with the aim of improving cardiovascular prevention and the quality of life of subjects affected. The present document, particularly addressed to the community pharmacist, is intended to provide current knowledge with the aim of a better shared management of patients with hypertension and cardiovascular risk. The present document pretends to serve as a tool for currently developed programs supporting the involvement of the community pharmacy in the care of patients with hypertension and cardiovascular risk. The document has been developed after a consensus between members from the Spanish Society of Hypertension, the Spanish Society of Community Pharmacy and the Research Group on Pharmaceutical Care from the University of Granada.

Introduction: The aim of the study is to categorize Spanish Community Pharmacies in relation to their position in the innovation-decision process by Rogers, in relation to the provision of Medication Review with follow up.Methods: A non validated questionnaire, previously used with the same objective, was used through a CATI methodology. The dependent variables were the five different innovation/decision phases defined by Rogers [Knowledge (F-C); Persuasion (F-P); Decision (F-D); Implementation (F-I); Maintenance (F-M). Another further phase was added including pharmacists in a phase previous to knowledge (No knowledge). Pharmacies in F-M were sub categorized in relation to the number of patients receiving the service: (F-M1) from 2 to 5 patients; (F-M2) 6 to 10 patients; (F-M3) 11 to 25 patients; (F-M4) 26 to 50 patients); (F-M5) 51 to 100 and (F-M6) 101 or more patients. Pharmacies with only one patient were included in F-I.Results: 1135 answers were received (response rate = 54%). Their distribution, according to the innovation/decision process by Rogers, was as follows: No knowledge (353; 31.1%); F-C (351; 30.9%); F-P (145; 12.8%); F-D (129; 11.4%); F-I (100; 8.8%); F-M (57; 5.0%). The F-M sub categories were: F-M1 (15; 26.3%); F-M2 (12; 21.1%); F-M3 (10; 17.5%) F-M4 (10; 17.5%); F-M5 (4; 7.0%). There are huge differences among Autonomous Communities, being Aragon the one with more pharmacies located in F-I and F-M, while Cantabria shows the most high level of no-knowledge (50.0%) having a 0.0% in F-I and F-M. A 0% in F-M is also shown in La Rioja, Canarias and Asturias. The existence of a private consultation room (ZAP) is shown as a facilitator for the provision of the service, and the existence of a responsible for the service seems to be very important to the sustainability of the service after it implementation. Conclusions: However the great efforts already done by different organizations and institutions to promote the implementation and sustainability of Medication Review with follow up, according to the data obtained in this study is possible to affirm that so far this service is poorly implemented in Spain. The existence of a private consultation room (ZAP) is shown as a facilitator for the implementation of Medication Review with follow up. On the other hand the existence of a pharmacist being the responsible for the service is shown as a support to the sustainability of the service, once this has been implemented. It seems necessary to change post degree educational programs. These shouldn’t be directed only to improve knowledge, but to develop skills and competencies, what means that these programs should try to change behaviours.

Objective: To assess the effect of a protocol-based pharmacist intervention on blood pressure control and medication adherence among treated hypertensive patients who are users of community pharmacies. Methods: A quasi experimental study design with control group has been designed to compare the effect of pharmaceutical intervention (intervention group) versus the standard healthcare procedure (control group) on blood pressure and medication adherence among hypertensive patients receiving drug therapy in community pharmacies. The patients will be allocated evenly between the two groups (ncontrol = nintervention), with a 6-month follow-up. The pharmaceutical intervention program will comprise three main parts: 1) patient education / information on issues relating to hypertension and medication adherence; 2) self-monitoring of blood pressure; and 3) interaction with the physician through personalized reports when the mean blood pressure values recorded at home exceed the treatment goal according to the clinical condition of the patient. In order to evaluate the effect of the pharmaceutical intervention upon medication adherence and blood pressure, blood pressure recordings will be made in the pharmacy, while percent medication adherence will be established based on pill count in both groups at the start and end of the study.Discussion: To our knowledge, this is the first study in the community pharmacy setting in Spain to evaluate the effectiveness of pharmaceutical intervention in combination with home blood pressure monitoring on blood pressure control. In addition, the pharmaceutical intervention has been designed for inclusion as standard practice in the context of Pharmaceutical Care.

A practical method for studying the reversible phases of pyocyanin
CONROY, DAVID A.

Observations on the ocurrence of pseudomonas aeruginosa in a sample of well water
CONROY, D.A.
A sample of well water was examined, and it was found that the total bacterial count and the coliform count were of no significance in condemning the water as unsuitable for drinking purposes. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found to be the predominating organism present and the possible relationship between this organism and thosel of the coliform group is considered. Reference to recent published work is made, in an attempt to show that the sample received should rightly be regarded as having been contaminated from faecal or sewage sources.

Lachica Garrido, M
The nature of the boron·carmine complex in solution is established· by three methods. These were the method of continuous variations by Job and modified by Vosburgh and Cooper, the mole ratio method proposed by Yoe and Jones, and the slope ratio method of Harvey and Manning and modified by Venkateswarlu and Raghava Rao. The results obtained by the three methods indicate that the empirical formula of the boron complex is two atoms of boron to one molecule of the reagent.

Aplicaciones analíticas de la Guanidiltiourea. III. Determinación volumétrica de Ni Y Co.
CAPITAN GARCÍA, F
CANALES SELVA, S

Cabrera Garrido, Antonio Luis

Aim. During the last years the professors of the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutic Chemistry have initiated a set of teaching actions with the aim of promoting the improvement of knowledge integration capacities corresponding to the subjects taught to students of Pharmacy degree; as well as a multidisciplinary and retroactive continuous evaluation model allowing to objectify its achievement. Methods. In order to develop these integration actions and their subsequent evaluation, several subjects of the Department have been coordinated and the knowledge necessary for understanding the contents of following courses have been analyzed. Within the subject of Toxicology, we have developed a set of actions based on the design, application and, in some cases, evaluation of a variety of activities. Results. In order to assess the success of these actions, we have compared the results obtained in a test of integration questions at the beginning of the course with the results of another test at the end of the course. The results obtained in the four items compared show a significant improvement in one question, a maintenance of results in another, and a non-significant relative improvement in the other two. Conclusions. We can conclude that the actions developed have partially achieved the proposed objectives. We consider that this tool can be very useful to promote greater coordination among teachers in the design of joint and transversal teaching materials and in integrated evaluation models.

Gravimetric determination of Cd (II) by guanidilthioureia
Capitán, F.
Canales, F.
In this work we propose a method for the gravimetric determination of Cd (II) based on the use of guanidyl thiourea and consistent, in essence, in transforming the SCd obtained in the SO4Cd by the action of the reactant in an ammoniacal medium. The results obtained show that the method allows a standard deviation of 0.0003 and an error on the average of +/- 0.18%.

Influence of gibberellic acid on tomato fructification
Blesa, Carlos
Gómez, Manuel
One of the actions of gibberellic acid is to induce patenocarpia. However, its action depends on the state of floral development at the time of its application. Our trials in tomato plants show us that only fully parthenocarpic fruits are produced when the gibberellic acid is applied to newly opened flowers. When applied to closed flowers or that had been open for some time, partially ttenocárpicos fruits are obtained, being in the first case of greater intensity the action of gibberellic acid.Other facts are revealed: first, that the treatments with GA increase the size of the patients; and followed, which increases fruiting, especially when the treatments are done with flowers that were open long before the gibberellic acid was applied, due to a hearing action of natural fructation and von AG treatments

Spectrophotometric determination of Zn (II) by formation of the Zn-Orotic Acid complex
Capitán, F.
Arrebola, A.
The influence of the pH of the medium on the absorption curves of the orotic-Zn (II) complex is studied, observing in them the existence of an isobestic point at a wavelength of 290 millimicres for pH values comprised between at least 6.25 and 9.5. The stability over time of the ornithic complex-Zn (II) is also studied, observing that it has stability for at least 4 hours. The complex complies with the law of Lambert-Beer although the slope of the corresponding straight line is significantly influenced by the concentration of orotic acid used.A method for the determination of Zn (II) in the concentration range between 0 and 49 ppm is proposed, establishing the error and its reproducibility. It is established by the spectrophotometric methods of Job, Harvey and Manning and Yoe and Jones the stoichiometry of the complex at pH 8 which turns out to be 1: 1. If we compare the results obtained in our previous work with those summarized in it, we conclude that the behavior of the orotic acid as a reagent for the spectrophotometric determination of Cu (II), Co (II) and Zn (II ) is very similar, similarly the results obtained by the corresponding described methods and even the stoichiometry of the complexes formed by the spectrophotometric methods are similar.

Action of gibberellic acid in roots. II. Pre-treatment action with gibberellic acid on the germination of sugarcane cuttings
Blesa, A. Carlos
Gómez, Manuel
We have studied the effect that presowing treatments for 6, 12 and 24 hours, of sugar can cuttings had on cutting germination. We tested two pre-sowing treatments; with a control solution containing 0.2% ethyl alcohol and 2% of Sorbithom "TO" as wetting agent; and with a giberellic acid 10mg/l, solution also containing 0.2% ethyl alcohol and 2% Sorbithom "TO" as wetting agent. Our results clearly showed, that presowing treatments with the control solution stimulated root initiation, root growth and number, bur having no effect on shoot growth. However, when pre-sowing treatments were made with the gibberellic acid solution stimuli of root initiation, root growth and number were even higher that when control solution was used. Gibberellic acid increased also shoot growth to a great extend. The effect on roots were greater with 12 hours pre-sowing treatment but shoot growth was more stimulated with 24 hours pre-spwing treatments.Hos a good germination represents a good scope of an excellent yield, 12 hours pre-sowing treatments of sugar cane cuttings, mainly with a 10mg/l gibberellic acid solution, are recommended.

Analytical applications of Phenylbiguanide and Phenylguanidilurea. I. Qualitative applications
Capitán, F.
Salinas, F.
The reactivity of phenyl-biguanide and phenyl-guanidil-urea against 47 cations is being studied. Both substances, which have shown a similar behavior, as could be expected from their similar structure, have a highly selective character because they only react with the cautions Cu (II), Ni (II) and Co (II). The sensitivity of these reactions is not, in the other hand, very high, as the maximum sensitivities observed -the reactions of phenyl-guanidil-urea against Ni (II) and Co (II)- are in a ratio of 1:200.000.Futhermore, we have studied the stoichiometry of the resulting products of the reactions between phenyl-biguanide with the cations Cu (II), Ni (II) and Co (II).

Analytical applications of anthragalol and anthrapurpurine. III.- Spectrophotometric determination of Th (IV) with anthrapurpurine
Capitán, F.
Román, M.
The use of Anthrapurpurin for the spectrophotometric determination of Th (IV), is described. A study is made of the stability of solutions (in ethanol) of Anthrapurpurin Th (IV) complex. The complex obeys Lambert-Beer's Law, in spite of the fact that the slope of the straight-line is greatly influenced by the concentration of the Anthrapurpurin used. A method is proposed for the determination of Th(IV) for concentrations between 7 and 21 ppm and the error and reproducibility of this method is stablished.

Spectrophotometric determination of Ca (II) by anthrapurpurine. II. Use of hydroalcoholic medium
Capitán, F.
Román, M.
Continuing the work about the use of Anthrapurpurine for the spectrophotometric determination of Ca (II), a study is made of the satibility of hydro-alcoholics solutions of Anthrapurpurine and Anthrapurpurine-Ca complex in amoniacal media. Since the solutions of the mentioned complex are sufficiently stable and obeys the Lambert-Beer's law for concentrations from 1 to 8 ppm, a method for the determination of Ca (II) is proposed. The error and reproducibility of this method is stablished.

The Laurea in chemistry and pharmaceutical technology
Cicconetti, Pierandrea
After illustrating the degree of studies and the characteristics of the degree course in Chemistry and Technology Pharmaceuticals, it is noted that it is placed between the courses in Chemistry and Pharmacy.Pointing out to the fact that the new title does not currently confer the diploma of aptitude for the practice of the profession of the pharmacist, it is asserted that the course of recent institution is directed essentially to the pharmaceutical chemist who acts in industry and in the European Economic Community.

Epidemiological studies on Spilocaea oleagina, in the Granada area
Ramos Clavero, Pedro
We have studied the development of "olive-leaf spot" caused by Spilocaea oleagina in Granada, by means of the infection rate of the leaves attacked. Therefore it has been possible to determine the periods of maximum infectin and the relation between this infection (and the falling of leaves) and the geografic situation of the trees. We have proved that the damage caused by the disease in our zone is clearly greater than that in other countries. Finally, rules are given about preventing the disease by means of anual antifungal treatments.

Citation analysis
Objectives: Ars Pharmaceutica has been indexed in the Emerging Sources Citation Index from Web of Science. This allows tracking the citation activity of the journal. The main contribution of this paper is to analyze quantitatively the citation patters of the journal. Methods: In this study we use the citation metrics obtained from the SciELO database. To identify received citations we have retrieved all citing documents from Web of Science and processed the following data: publication year; journal; authors; countries; document type and language. Results: The most cited journlas by Ars Pharmaceutica are positioned in the first quartile of the Journal Citation Reports, in the Pharmacology & Pharmacy category. Received citations, which are progressively increasing, belong mostly from journals indexed in the Pharmacology & Pharmacy; Chemistry and Food Science Technology categories, well positioned according to their Journal Impact Factors. Citing countries and institutions come mainly from Spain and India, which along with Brazil and Mexico, represent 56% of all citations. Citing documents are mostly research articles written in English language. Conclusions: By analyzing cited documents from Ars Pharmaceutica we conclude that it is integrated on the consumption of international literature. Received citations reflect an international scope, although it still does not reach figures similar to other journals. The relation between authors, countries, institutions and language indicate that citations come from Spanish autors publishing in impact journals written in English. This model suggests that the consumption of published research is basically national, and does not reach the international sphere with the exception of Latin America and India. This isolation is still a pending challenge fro Spanish journals.

Two of the most important neglected tropical diseases, Chagas disease and leishmaniasis, are caused by protozoan intracellular parasites of the Trypanosomatida order. These infections provoke a high social burden and lead to the death of a large number of patients. The host triggers several immune mechanisms, but in the absence of adequate treatment, the infection becomes chronic and in many cases causes the appearance of serious alterations. T lymphocytes are fundamental cells of the adaptive system and are the main immune elements that orchestrate the cell-to-cell response in the context of intracellular infections. Furthermore, it has been described that continuous and persistent stimulation in response to pathogenic antigens causes loss of antigen-specific functional capacities in the T cell subsets. This process is known as exhaustion. This review explores the results to date of the exhaustion process during chronic infections caused by the trypanosomatid parasites Leishmania spp. and Trypanosoma cruzi. A large amount of evidence shows upregulation of the markers of the exhaustion process, namely, the inhibitory receptors, during these chronic infections. This increased expression is observed in both the CD4+ and CD8+ T cell populations. In parallel, with this increased expression of inhibitory receptors, the loss of antigen-specific functional capacity of these T cells is detected, reducing the lymphoproliferative potential and the ability to produce protective molecules against these parasitic infections, such as Th1-like cytokines, among others. Additionally, a positive correlation between the high coexpression of these inhibitory molecules and the severity of the pathology is demonstrated. Furthermore, T cell populations experience a phenotypic fluctuation in the course of these infections toward the predominance of effector memory subsets with a late or terminal differentiation state. This balancing in turn affects the functional capacity of the T cells and enriches the number of cells with senescent and apoptotic characteristics. Thus, it has been demonstrated the existence of an exhaustion process that affects key populations for the parasite control. However, the role of this process in the progression of the severity of these pathologies is still unknown. The current drugs used to treat these neglected diseases seem to partially reverse this exhaustion process, denoting a reduction in the high inhibitory receptor expression observed prior to chemotherapies. An improvement in the functional capacity of these T cell populations is also observed, which could be related to the reversion of the dysfunctional process. However, the efforts made to date to evaluate blocking therapies do not lead us to a promising conclusion. It will probably be necessary to test the simultaneous blockade of several pathways and to continue advancing the knowledge to verify their possible use as immunotherapy. It is therefore necessary to continue investigating how this process is triggered and to what extent it influences the appearance of the symptomatology of patients.

Report on the Use of Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Test

Farmacia Comunitaria
Dispensación
Política Sanitaria
Direct-To-Consumer Genetic Tests
Community Pharmacy
Dispensing Act
Health Policies
The Direct-To-Consumer Genetic Tests (TGDC) provide access to genetic information without necessarily involving a physician or any other health personnel in the process. TGDC can promote public awareness of genetic origin about some diseases, as, by bringing this type of information to general population, and not only to a specific patient, society becomes more aware of them. Therefore, a healthier lifestyle, personalized medicine and promotion of self-care are also increased. Nevertheless, being the principle of autonomy the main argument alluded to in favor of the unlimited access to TGDC, it is not possible to affirm that the consumer acquiring them, is truly autonomous. The companies commercializing them do not currently have a quality track on the predictive value of their tests. Therefore, the precautionary principle should also operate, by preventing damage to whoever is exposed, without having the necessary information. The non-regulation of TGDC may pose a risk to the consumer for two reasons: firstly, the absence of pre and post test genetic counseling by qualified personnel in accredited centers - as established by the Biomedical Research Law 14 / 2007-, and secondly, the absence of a correct interpretation of the results by a professional can pose a medical and psychological risk to the user If a consumer decides to acquire one of these genetic tests online, the test is directly sent to home, and he/she will receive the results of the test and deciding what to do with them. These new possibilities for medical-health information are associated to these new ethical-legal approaches to which it is necessary paying attention in Spain. The community pharmacy, as a health center and organized structure, next to general population and involved in education, professional advice, and participation in health programs, become the perfect allies in matters of possible health regulation of the TGDC. The protocols and screening studies carried out in Spain make the current community pharmacy an advantageous option for the regulation of TGDC, integrating with the pharmacy as a private health facility of public interest, within the National Health System.

Influence of percentage rationing on digestibility and nutritional performance of a pig diet
Boza, J.
Fonollá, J.
Varela, G.
We have determined the digestibility, growth efficiency coefficient, daily increase of weight and transformation indexes of a compound food in pigs during the fattening period, using rations representing 3, 4, 5, and 6% of the weight of the animal in dry matter of the foor, with th object of determining the influence of the level of the diet on these coefficients and indexes. We have also used 2 and 4.5% rations of the weight of the animal in dry matter of the food.Four digestibility experiments, based on a latin square and using the techniques recommended by the European Federation of Zootechnia, have been carried out by the direct method.Graphs have been prepared showing the variations found in the growth and in the transformation indexes due to the different levels of diet.Lastly, we have treated our results statiscally using variance analysis, average significance test and correlation coeficients with their probable error.

Callao Fabregat, V.
A plate technique to investigate the ability for P liberation from DNA, by soil bacteria, has been studied.DNA, in colloidal suspension, (pH= 7-7,1), is added to a basal medium making it opaque.Detection of desoxirribonuclease producing organisms was achieved by halos obtained (photography).Halo formation must be estimated as a proof of P liberation from DNA, since it was confirmed, by checking of the same bacteria in another technique, (also described in this paper), using a basal liquid medium with DNA as sole phosphorus source.

This article is based on the lecture given by Dr Carmen Peña at the start of the academic year of the María José Faus Dáder Chair of Pharmaceutical Care, of the University of Granada. It narrates the genesisand development of Pharmaceutical Care and the essential role played by the International Federation of Pharmacists (FIP) in its development. In 1999, FIP and WHO together published the document “Good Practices in Pharmacy: Standards for theQuality of Pharmaceutical Services ” which has been updated continually until its 2011 version. In Spain, while the global development of Pharmaceutical Care was taking off, a group of Spanish pharmacy leaders mobilized to introduce the concepts of the Tokyo Declaration 93, in relation to the principles of Pharmaceutical Care.At the present time these pioneers, among whom are the General Council of Pharmacists and the Chairof Pharmaceutical Care of the University of Granada which is responsible for the integration of the Pharmaceutical Care group of said university, are firmly committed to Professional Pharmacy by way of offering quality pharmaceutical services aimed at the patient.

Mechanism of intercellular cornrnunication inhibition after induction of nitric oxide synthase in astrocytes during development
VERA, B.
SÁNCHEz-ABARCA, L.
Normal brain development requires an active metabolic cooperation among glial
cells through intercellular communications. This communication is regulated by different
factors, such as nitric oxide (-NO) synthase (NOS) activity, which inhibits gap junction
permeability in rat neonatal astrocytes. Since this effect is accompanied by a mitochondrial
dysfunction, we have proposed the possibility that both phenomena are related. Thus,
antimycin-mediated energy deficiency in rat neonatal astrocytes inhibits gap junction
permeability. This effect is reversible and caIcium-dependent. The energy deficiencymediated
inhibition of intercellular communication after -NO synthesis induction in
glial cells may help to clarify the mechanisms causing brain damage by perinatal
hypoxia, and also to the knowledge of the brain pathophysiological development.

Quesada, E.
Socías, M. S.
Gómez, M. C.
Suñé, J. M.ª
Cerezo, A.

Vanadium (V) reacts with the 2-pyridinealdehyde-2-quinolylhydrazone in hydroalcoholic mixtures at pH values between 3 and 5 (pD = 6'3), glving a complex which stoichlometry from spectrophotometric data has been established as 2: 1 (reagent: cation). This red coloured complex is stable 2 hours at least and its maximal absorption is shown between the pH values 4 and 5"2. The opti- caI den sities of the solutlons of that complex obey the Lambert-Beer law in the range of concentrations between 0'5 and 6 ppm of vanadium. The molar absoptivity coefficient is (10'0 ± 0'3) . 103 and the unstability constant pK = 8'00 ± 0'04.

Estudio del complejo del NiCl2 con etilendiamenotetraalilo
J. M. Suárez Cardeso
The structure of the ethilenediaminetetraallyl was elucidated by MS, NMR and IR espectrofotometries, and syntheses condicions for the preparation of the complex of this ligand with anhydrous nickel (II) chloride are described. The obtained solid violet complex shows to be non-conductor in acetone and monomeric in chloroform solutions. IR espectral studies indicate that in the solid state there are two types of aliphatic c:c bond present. It is concluded that two double bonds are coordinated and the other two are free. H NMR data indicate that all the four vinyl c:c bonds are equivalent in solution, and are shifted with respect to the ligand free, indicating a rapid bonded ←→ non-bonded equilibrium for the - CH2 . CH:CH2 groups to the nickel atom. An octahedral structure with the ligand tetracoordinated and two chlorine atomons in cis positions is proposed for the solid complexo.
