The paper analyzes the social phenomena of infanticide and child abandonment focusing on the analysis of two kind of women: the mothers that abandoned or killed their children and the wetnurses that had to take care of, instruct and protect the waifs.

This article is inscribed within the framework of a long term research work around the feminization process of written transmission of domestic and everyday culinary knowledge, and the spread of that form of transmission in Argentina during the period 1880-1945. In these pages we focus particularly on a moment of the said process: the one that was being moulded under the consumer society, concentrating in recipe books, advertisement, recipes, female authors and the desired effects on reader-cook-consumer women.

This paper will review part of the documentation cataloged in the “Fondo sobre la Sección Femenina en la Provincia de Sahara” in the Archivo General de la Administración. There is preserved the documentation collected by the institution between 1964 and 1975, period when was settled in the former Spanish province of Sahara. The Saharawi women definition will be revised to check how the subject was formulated as one in which was possible and a duty to act. The Falangist institution used this discourse in order to legitimize itself not only for the colony population but inside the Franquist regime.

In this paper I draw a personal map of the shared debates and dilemmas that historians of emotions have to navigate in our research. Instead of writing a historiography of emotions circumscribed to the traditional schools of History, I mapped the diverse interdisciplinary debates as a useful way of exploring and gaining consciousness on contemporary emotional dilemmas which are particularly relevant for women’s everyday life.

Philosophical theories of justice tend to view justice either as questions of recognition or as questions of redistribution. In order to become “neutral” among the plurality of the good life in modern democratic societies, liberal theories have been limited to redistribution. According to Nancy Fraser, the most general meaning of justice is parity of participation. Equal opportunities to participation presupposes just redistribution as well as and recognition of culture, gender and sexual preferences. She proposes a conception of recognition, not linked to the idea of identity politics, but to a concept of status. Fraser has delivered a theory of justice that makes it possible to decide whether claims of recognition are legitimate or not. If claims for recognition are justified in a conception of justice that is agreeable from a common public perspective, a liberal theory does not need be restricted to distributive justice.

Starting with the dominant ideas about the inability of the women for the artistic creation and their deficiency of “Genius”, I made a revision of the women that have written and thought about the fine arts and the creativity of the women. In the first half of the twentieth century prevail the women that have the same current opinions in their culture and in their time but gradually appear other opinions more auspicious for the creative women. From the fine arts some artists have transmitted their difficulties, points of view and experiences.

Studies on women and gender have focused, for some time and in major or minor measure, on all the stages of the Humanity. Nevertheless, some of them have not received the necessary attention, as it is the case of the Ancient Near East. In the present work I propose a historiographic revision on the subject, paying special attention to the particularities and the specific problems of the topic. Likewise it is shown, as a kind of bibliographical introduction, the concrete themes which have been treated and the future perspectives, in order to estimate the potential of the sources.

This article proposes a reading of Desengaños amorosos (1647) by Spanish writer Maria de Zayas y Sotomayor that analyzes her use of different textual strategies, especially explicit allusions to Mary Magdalene´s devotional iconography. Zayas criticizes the culture of the period after the Council of Trent (1545-1563), where various changes were implemented regarding the use of devotional iconography. We propose thinking Zayas´s figure as part of a genealogy of women writers who share a feminine, critical view of culture that is articulated through the deployment of discursive strategies that subvert, question, and unveil the official discourse of patriarchal culture.

The analysis of both, the arising of a new creole identity in New Spain, and the discourse that was created there in order to defend local interests, has been undertaken from various perspectives but, until now, the important role played by women in this processes has not been duly considered. The aim of this paper is to highlight the need of placing women within all those matters that have been traditionally considered by historiography as key in the constitution of creole identity. Additionally, we will incorporate to our analysis a number of matters that have not been taken into account before and in which women also played an important role.

In this text we will explore the complex relationship between republicanism and slavery from a gender studies perspective. For that purpose, we will study the journey to Europe of Abbe, a slave from New Jersey and her owner, the Republican Sarah Livingston Jay, who was married to John Jay. We will also examine the positions to which Atlantic Republicanism relegated those excluded social groups, i. e. free women and slaves. For the revolutionaries it appeared to be no contradiction between the Republican narrative and the inequality concerning European women and slaves. All debates dealing with slavery pointed out the lack of freedom, but never raise the question about the accepted condition of inequality in their own specific society.

This bibliographical selection is aimed to clarify the historical development of physical education and sport, to legitimize the process of institutionalization and also it contributes to a better understanding of the historical studies about women in the social construction of feminism in 19th century Spain.

This article aims to observe and construct masculine and feminine prototypes in the slavery, in Ancient Rome, in the works concerning the administration of rural properties at those times. Through the reading of Xenophon, Cato, Varro and Columella, I intend to value the differences that occur depending on whether we talk about a male or female slave, exemplified as vilicus and vilica. So this text is indeed, an analysis of the behaviour (functioning) of a legal and social system from the point of view of gender in Ancient Roman Society.

Daughter of a rich merchant, the family of Maria Agnès Ribera Garau devised a plan to disinherit her and forced her to be a nun. At the cloister she acquired a wide intellectual knowledge. Thanks to the Decree regarding secularization she was allowed to leave the convent, but with the rise of absolutism she had to go into exile to France. She supported liberalism and fought the Church for 12 years in order to get her vows annulled. She defended her case before the Vatican Court and the Holy See granted her freedom. Henceforth, she devoted herself to writing and promoting the education for women.

The majority of female political prisoners in Franco’s times that have left their testimonies kept themselves apart from common-law prisoners, usually prostitutes, because of their rejection of non-normative sexuality. Their position, however, was not homogeneous. In this article we try to delve into the reasons for the divergence among the prisoners themselves: the communists taking one side, and the political prisoner and republican writer Carlota O’Neill separating her opinion from theirs. The position of the latter reveals a much more open-minded approach to sexuality. Within the context of the current attempt to recuperate our historical memory, a biographical study of her figure allows us to claim her as one of the great republican exiles.

The aim of this paper is to broach the subject of the origins of the teaching profession feminization in Spain, through the study of the schoolmistresses who taught in the schools supported by the Economic Society of Valencia between 1819 and 1866. We will emphasize the discourse that identified schoolmistresses and mothers since the middle of XIX century and we will agree with the following hypothesis: that discourse was the consequence, not the cause, of the incorporation of women to a public field like the teaching profession.

This article describes from a historical perspective, the discursive construction of social representations related to family and places for women in Sociedad Rural Argentina’s conceptions (SRA). As one of the most long-standing and traditional Argentine rural corporations, the SRA represents, from its foundation in the middle of 19th century, the great landowners as well as it is considered the institutional expression of the national elite.Through the critical analysis of the images and texts published in Anales, SRA's official journal, this study tries to reveal this particular corporate vision of women and their roles in families and society in Argentina from 1930 to 1955.

Spanish first female director's first feature film, El Gato Montés (Rosario Pi, 1935), partakes of the tradition of the so-called “españolada”, which at the time used to adapt theatre plays onto screen. Based upon Maestro Penella´s homonymous zarzuela, Pi, who was also the scriptwriter, recuperated the character of the gypsy Soleá and, with very little changes in the plot, managed to re-write some aspects that had to do with the relationship between women and men, their own bodies and decisions. This article establishes a comparison between the two texts and uses film and gender theory in order to analyse the mechanisms of appropriation, writing and re-writing of the female voice.

In addition to the housework (shopping, cooking, washing, knitting, sewing, raising children, or care for elder and sick people), women in Ancient Near East worked outside the home too, although this fact has been omitted or undervalued. Various sources show a wide range of trades and occupations, carried by both men and women, but laws regulate women’s work in only three occupations which are exclusively feminine: wet nurse and nursemaid, tavern keeper and prostitute. The article discusses what kind of jobs were performed by women in 1st and 2nd millennium BCE: agricultural worker, magician / healer, weaver, shopkeeper, hairdresser, midwife, etc., and why legislators were only interested in regulating the tavern keeping, the nursing and the prostitution.

In his epic poem, Punica, Silius Italicus presents different prototypes of women in a way more or less faithful to the repressentations that his predecessors had made before. However, in his work also there appear women characterized in a less traditional way, as in Sofonisba’s and Asbyte’s case, types of women described in a more personal way and in accordance with the circumstances of the age of the poet. The pretensions of our study are, therefore, the analysis of these two feminine figures, because of their exceptional character.

The content of the beata María de Ajofrín’s visions (d. 1489), as told by her confessor/ biographer Juan de Corrales in the late fifteenth century, and incorporated at the end of the sixteenth century by José de Sigüenza into his Historia de la Orden de San Jerónimo, validates the establishment of the Inquisition in defense of Catholic orthodoxy. The defense of orthodoxy is also served by the depiction of the relationship between the beata’s spiritual life and the Sacraments of Confession and Communion. This relationship reinforces the spiritual relevance of these Sacraments, and the concomitant central role of priests as administrators of these Sacraments, even as the clergy is in need of reform.

The II Spanish Republic (1931-1939) was built on the more progressive political and social rights of the democratic liberalism of the time. However, women were still not able to easily practice in all legal posts. In 1931, they were granted the right to be notaries and property registrars. But in 1934, they were denied the right to be judges and public prosecutors. During the Civil War, the fi rst female judges, magistrates and public prosecutors were nominated in small numbers. However, this equality with men would end if the backers of the 1936 coup d’etat won the war. And this is what happened. The dictatorship of General Franco (1939-1975) put women under the control of men. Once again, women lived as social and legal inferiors. The political and civil rights gained during the Republic were left far behind.

This article tries to explore the parallelisms between the female model roles that were designed by Franco and Eamon de Valera´s regimes both in Spain and in Ireland respectively. These two rulers, with a very strong fascist influence, come to power in the interwar decades and their regimes will last until the de seventies, leaving a deep imprint in the history of both countries. Nationalist ideologies and the doctrines of the Catholic Church ally in order to create a national discourse where, symbolically, women occupy a privileged position, but in practice their rights and aims are radically cut. This comparative study shows how two nationalist phenomena with different historical origins exert similar forms of oppression upon women: in both countries, female agency is limited to the domestic domain and legislation, ideology and education become the pillars of these regimes, thus imposing a radical discrimination against women and reducing their identity to symbols and metaphors.

This paper explores the correspondence between the Gran Duchess Cristina of Lorena and some of the most important Spanish noblewomen between 1590 and 1620. Thanks to the extensive documentation —hold in the Archivio di Stato di Firenze— we are able to rebuilt informal power networks controlled by women, who acted as Madrid Court reporters in a peculiar difficult moment for the Tuscan and Spanish Monarchy political relationship. This article would question the traditional image attributed to Cristina of Lorena, and the role which was played by these women linked by ties of patronage or even blood or in-law relationships, where political and economic interests were the key of these relations.

The paper emphasizes the “female historical invisibility”, many times reported in Gender Historiography, with the ultimate goal of broadcast the Francoist repression against women during the period elapsed since the beginning of the Spanish Civil War to the Franco period. This paper is, also, to add a small contribution to the significant effort developed by some colleagues on this field of study, and it stresses some aspects less known and less studied. This prisons were full of republican women, some of them sentenced to death. On one hand, the text analyses the prison files as an example of the official repression discourse. On the other hand, it also deals with some of these women’s stories, testimonies and memories as an example of antifranquism resistance.

This article presents a double reflection on historical heuristics and hermeneutics: the multiple perspectives that each historical time casts on the past are the consequence of specific inheritance received from tradition and historical contexts which allow room for eventually original innovations. They all have equal moral and epistemological status, including our present view, if not in terms of the quality of the factual reconstruction or final aims, rather in terms of its nature. They all are reconstructions of a narrative representation with a specific semiotic, political and social dimension of the position, interests and understanding of groups in dialogue with their present and future audiences. The various historiographical views on the figure of the controversial Twelfth-century Queen Urraca of Castile and Leon is the case study used to put in context the continuities and discontinuities in the representation of the feminine gender, in order to perform an exercise in intellectual humility.

In this study we allude to some of the most significant legal victories that have been unleashed in the Spanish legal system, —especially following the entry into force of our Constitution of 1978— by the full recognition of women´s rights, in matter of family, marriage and parent-child relationships. These changes have come to recognize the role that women de iure have been legitimately called upon to play as citizens in all areas of life (family, work, political, economic, cultural and social) and that so many times has been unjustly taken from them.

Hundreds of thousands of cuneiform tablets were written in Sumerian during the period known as Ur III or Third Dynasty of Ur in Mesopotamia (ca. 2112-2004 BCE). Most of them are administrative texts listing workers responsible for particular duties. In the secondary literature, the question of the possible kinship relationships between the workers listed in these texts has been repeatedly studied. In this paper we examine some of these proposals, paying special attention to filiation and offspring, and we offer some critical insights from the perspective of certain postfeminist positions.

This article analyzes, in a panoramic way, the personal and professional situation experienced by women artists of and in Salamanca throughout the last century. Under the influence of the global context of Spain —social, economic, political or religious— and of the particularities dictated by the provincial character of the city and its surroundings, the feminine activity in pictorial and sculptural matter has been sentenced to isolated efforts —not always serious, bordering on the anecdote and of scanty success— to which the years have given a normal look, prestige, reputation and respect between fans, critics and authors of both sexes. So, from a caprice developed by scantily motivated young women —according to what demonstrates the local press—, art has become for many women into need, into expression of an accused vocation that gasps to formulate their feelings, opinions and desires into the fruits of a professionally recognized and a personally stimulant career.

In this context it is discussed how women dressed in the Murcia environment using as a main source notarial documents, literature and the press, noting that Murcian women wore dressing that was close to the exogenous patterns and the different fashions that followed, transforming designs fabrics and ornamentation. Here, as in other cities such as Madrid or Barcelona, the rise of foreign clothes must be linked to the establishment of the Bourbon dynasty, economic and trade enhancement, increased sociability areas and more feminine presence in them.

The theories, speeches and paradigms of the New State imposed a return to the more traditional social models, than they took to the government to exert different mechanisms and criteria at the time of valuing and evaluating to the men and the women. And an example of those differences of gender we found it in the behavior of the Franco`s government to purify to the teaching training. The purge of teaching training was very complex, therefore this work is centered in a part of the process, about the type of accusations that were spilled against the teachers and the schoolmistresses -defined like sheets of charge-, concretely in the case of region of Castilla – La Mancha. The study of the accusations and of the valuation that the censors made of these, contributes to determine if the repression exerted displayed differences based on the gender.

The Christian feudal society was a patriarcal society. As it is known most of the patriarchal cultures identify feminity with maternity and ours it is not an exception. In this society it is restored a must be, a norm, whose purpose is the control of the fecundity and therefore of the sexuality. A set of strategies and discoursive practices fit and limit the women so that they disappear after the maternity, become mothers, in a representation or set of representations produced by that culture. We start from this base idea to construct the ideology, in which the vision of the women, although is also fitted in other plural and heterogenous aspects (mental, social, clasistas, political, etc.), is sustained on the base of the maternity; that is to say, that generates a division, quantitatively nonhomogenous, between fertile women and sterile women.

Biography allows to approach with great coherence the short times, the times of a life, to locate the personage in its individuality and the surroundings of people and circumstances that have fitted their life. Single it can give to the historians the dimension of the time of a life, the one that lived biographied men and women. The new interest on biography comes women’s history, the daily life, from the interest on popular culture. It is necessary to reconstruct the “social surface” on which each individuality moves constantly in a plurality of fields. We have tried to introduce, following general cases, particular problems, not only of high feminine personages but also of small lives of common women.

Leonor López de Córdoba –born around 1390 in Cordoba– is the first female Spanish writer. She composed a work entitled Memoirs, which combines elements of confessions, autobiographies, memoirs and spiritual testimonies.Leonoŕs Memoirs has interesting similarities in style, subject and purpose with Elena Quottaneŕs Memoirs. Elena was born in Austria around 1400; she is the first German woman writer and her Memoirs is the first autobiographic narrative in German literature. Leonor and Elena were lady-in-waiting of widowed queens and they played an important role in the unstable political situation in their respectives countries. Both composed interesting works that are different but complementary to the “official historical texts”.

El médico de su honra (The surgeon of his honor) and other plays of the traditional Spanish Baroque drama helped to spread the conception that husbands, lovers, brothers, or men of the family in general have the right to punish a woman who had broken the social rules about family, love or sex. This article studies domestic violence in late medieval Castile looking at the case of a woman, Catalina Fernández, accused of living with a married man and put in prison for thirteen months. It stresses the support of legal authorities in the punishment of women who broke the mentioned social rules.

The Franco victory in the Civil War inaugurated a totalitarian regime that by its beginnings were inspired by aesthetic, the tactics and the facist values. In agreement with the objective to indoctrinate to all the population under the falangista ideology one, the Francoism would develop an exhaustive control of all the facets of the daily life as well as of the mass media. In this context a series magazines for women is created. Between those magazines, Medina, could be outstanded, because in its pages it presents the model for women that the new Regime tries to create before the critical situation of postwar period.Submission, service and sacrifice are the values transmitted to women, who must be (mainly) wives, mothers and servants of the Mother country. The life of the woman, in clear inferiority respect to men, is confined to the care of the home and the children, and its public life is limited to agreement and to collaborate with the interests of the Regime.

Rosalía de Castro (1837-1885) is undoubtedly an essential architect of the Contemporary Galician History. She was its voice and its principal interpreter. Her patriotism is united to her constant worry for womeńs condition and fate, which is a central topic throughout her work. Her feminism is correlative to her vital, philosophic and political position in life. It is necessary to puzzle out the reasons of a false legend that still surrounds her and bring her back to the truth of her production, her radicalism and her transgression as a freethinker and poet. She represents, in short, the beginning of Galician modernity.

In the middle of the 19th century, Jose Vieira of Castro, a well-known member of Parliament, murdered his wife –a young woman of only eighteen years of age– in his house of Lisbon. The motive was a supposed infidelity on the part of her. The case stirred the public opinion of Lisbon, provoked reactions in favour and in opposition to the convict, and unleashed a debate concerning the penal figure of the adultery. This work analyzes this aspect from the point of view of the history of law, putting it in relation with the concept of honour and examining his private repair: the duel. Likewise, the situation of women is approached from the educational point of view and the reflection that the feminine adultery had in the Portuguese literature of the 19th century.

Although some well-known female journalists actively collaborated in prestigious publications in the first years of the last century, they very rarely obtained the excellent publicity that writers received through newspapers and magazines. It was not until the Second Spanish Republic that women started to stand out in the field of journalism. They did not only stand out as writers, but also as illustrators, cartoonists and photographers in response to the demand emerging as a consequence of the interests and attitudes of a new, more popular public. This public began to conceive the press not only as a means of information or political propaganda, but also as a convenient resource for entertainment that reflected the identity changes occurring with regard to the roles of both sexes.

The subject of analysis is the media impact when the italian women had their first chance to vote. The debate and the silence that the general and the specific press reflected are also taken into account. Another subject of the study are the visual representations on the cinematographic news programs during the 1946 elections. Also, the activities stimulated by the Italian women during the last years of World War II in favour of voting and its social repercussions and the attitudes of the different political parties towards this new phenomenon are also considered.

The representation of the prostitutional world during the first Francoism is always embedded in the illustration of the dropouts; its aim being to cast a light on the indescribable. Moving away from the politically correct fiction depicts a vision of prostitution, sometimes contrasting with reality. Studying novel writers such as Cela and Martín-Santos reveals to be of great interest since both writers, with noticeably different narrative technics, offer a critical and denunciatory vision of the Spanish society as well as of the gloomy prostitutional world. However, fiction will never fill in the numerous gaps that exist in the history of prostitution during that time. Indeed, the referential illusion that defines fiction, forbids its use as a historical document, which does not decrease the significance of the literary substratum.

Along this paper I tried to report an analysis about the debates occurred around the feminine rights in Argentina at the beginnings of 20th century. With this purpose, I study the work of a Spanish socialist – became naturalized Argentine– Enrique del Valle Ibarlucea, along the debates about the inclusion of divorce to the Civil Code. Del Valle presented this project in 1918 at the Senate of the Nation, when he was the first socialist senator in America. Starting from this fact, I am interested in showing some problems typical of this time – the production of modern citizenship, the modernization and secularitation of institutions– and also some voices – up to now unknown– that could question the power relations between sexes.

This article studies the figure of the wet-nurse and the attempt of regulation of mercenary breast-feeding, in connection with the social movement of child-welfare. The high infant mortality rate was tried to lessen, considering the legal control over wet-nurses agencies and the regulated breast-feeding “on salary” as a main measure to solve this awful problem. Other measures taken, as well as the creation of social welfare institutions and improving the existing ones, were aimed to the awareness of the problem, developing with several means an educational spreading campaign, specially addressed to women, on childcare and children’s feeding.

Criminality
The Brazilian Military Dictatorship went deeper in the criminalization of poverty process, joined with its National Security Ideology and the necessity of control of the social order. Its ideology about children criminality was defined by characterizing the poor minors as potential criminals, as “social problem” and as “guilty” of their own marginality. And, although the laws and the jurists talked about re-education and not about punishment, the dictatorial and repressive context and the speech that projected an image of the children as “social faulty product” made that a penal-retributive dynamics never abandoned the real treatment. Our questions are, what was the position of the criminal girls and teenagers in that universe?, did they receive the same treatment that the boys?, or did the Dictatorship project other ideologies and politics on them?

Greek mythology has been transmitted by literature and its stories have suffered some variations until these days. Many film directors refer to the myths and have adapted them and made them visible to society. This is the case of Pandora, the first woman from the Greek Mythology, who represents the seductive body. She is the cause of men’s troubles and misfortunes. Different directors have been seduced by her and have recreated her beauty as well as the danger of her intemperance. This article analyzes Pandora’s character from the point of view of Albert Lewin, Paul Auster y G.W. Pabst.

The peronism started when the political participation was reserved only for men. It included those absent groups of the political scenario; it managed to change women’s situation by the approval of the Feminine Suffrage Law and the creation of the Feminine Peronist Party, which incorporated them massively in politics, for the very first time. This incursion can not be analyzed without making any reference to the role of Eva Duarte de Perón, not like the first lady but as a political leader who built an unthinkable power for a woman, in the forties.

The universe of Franco regime’s female prisons is one aspect of the investigation on repression that is mostly invisible. The investigations and works carried out by the history of women and gender, together with the testimonies of these selfsame repressed women have made it possible to recuperate and know the historical experience of the militant anti Franco regime. Starting from the female prisoners’ files from the Provincial Woman’s Prison and Santa Clara’s Convent Prison in the city of Valencia we can begin to rescue some of the political female prisoners of the Franco regime in “El Pais Valenciano”. They are women who were members of different organisations; some were councillors and mayors in their towns. They were doubly punished for being republicans and for being women, for having challenged the traditional role of their gender, defended and imposed by the Franco regime. It is a first try to recuperate women committed to the defence of the II Republic, giving them protagonism and historical significance before the invisibility of the traditional historiography, being able to write down their imprisonment and resistance experiences. To rescue them from the dark area in which the historical investigation of this subject finds itself.

During the Spanish Isabeline period (1843-1868) female intellectual authorship undergoes a process of oficialization that triggers in Galicia the political appropriation of that same literary subjectivity through which proto-nationalist ideals are articulated. During the decade of the sixties, owing to Manuel Murguía’s pro-Galician liberal discourse, the significant “Galician woman” becomes the symbolic repository of the differentiation between Galician and Spanish traditions. It is then when women’s writing grows to be an inherent part of the emergent Galician literary system.

The founding of the Women’s Section of the Falange, despite signifying that the Falangists accept a certain presence of “their” women in the public sphere, defends a feminine model anchored in the private area. Its activities are essentially social, conceived as an extension of the domestic role of women into the public sphere. In 1936, however, with the electoral campaign, these roles seem to be extended to the political domain. The present study aims to analyse the meaning and the reality of this apparent evolution of the Women’s Section with its contradictions and its difficulty in positioning itself between the public and the private spheres. These contradictions become clear in the figure of Rosario Pereda, chief of the Women’s Section of Valladolid, who was a recognized orator esteemed by her masculine comrades.

The highly fragmentary record of the female presence in the arts in Argentina before 1890 turns research of this period into a true challenge. From the Revolución de Mayo (1810) on there was a strong encouragement to develop new creative activities, which have been neglected by art history. In this article I propose an approach to a set of objects and practices, located in the margins of the discourse of art history. This group, which existed in an area between public and private spheres, had a high aesthetic and politic value, coming into conflict with the traditional representation of women who carried it out as simple “ladies of the house”.

This paper explores the biographical and intellectual profile of the writer María Laffitte (1902-1986) drawing from three thematic areas ever present in her projects: the scientific breakthroughs, the women sociocultural circumstances and the modern art. This study of her ideas allows to deepen in the knowledge of a progressive and enlightenment woman, who knew how to argue the imposed meanings by the francoist regime in Spain, proposing new ideas connected with claims and some achievements of the early democracy.

The Queen of the Night, from The magic flute (by W. A. Mozart and E. Schikaneder) portrays a betrayed mother, an undervalued spouse, a strong and independent woman and a political opponent for Sarastro (the Sun Circle leader priest). She is a rara avis in the operatic scene, where female characters submissive to the patriarchal system are predominant. The Queen of the Night represents the confrontation between nature and civilization, matriarchy and patriarchy, and the universal conflict between mothers and daughters. The last point, where the other are converging, is the main goal of the paper.

This article is addressed to the study of violence against women between 1900 and 1931 through a systematic analysis of the sentences of the Audiencia Provincial de Córdoba. The paper is based on a proven methodology. We have selected trials in which women appeared as victims. Thanks to it we can say that the woman was the victim of three types of violence: physical, sexual and moral. The article is structured according this three types of violence, paying attention to differentiate what we today call “gender violence” against other violence characterized by archaism and rurality.

A second stage she works in Murcia, and there, she is more involved on the practice of free exercise of architectural profession. During her work in DGRD she performs, inter alia, a serie of reconstruction projects in Carabanchel. Analyse these projects, considering the study of the previous architectural factors, the place and the organization of the object itself, allows us to reflect on the role of the anonymous architectures in the urban and social construction.

Some women (in stark contrast to the legal formalism that isolated them from any kind of political imperium / potestas), nevertheless laid claim to auctoritas. From the time of Augustus to the Severine emperors, women arrived at the peak of their legal and economic power in the ancient world due to their promotion as “first lady” of the Imperial household. Both roman jurists and stoic philosophers opposed the notion of a weak-minded second sex (infirmitas sexus). From the late Roman Empire onwards, Church Fathers began to promote their version of feminine “auctoritas” based on traditional custom (mores maiorum), which reduced womens’ status to that of the subaltern.

Although today there are many studies on the Spanish feminist movement during the transition, very few researches had deepened the role of women in the parties that shaped the democratic reform. Therefore, this article aims to analyse the socio-cultural transition of the PSOE feminine militants: a party that, after the death of Franco and, especially with the great power it held during the Eighties, directly conditioned practices and attitudes of Spanish society. How did these women take part in a party of men and for men? How did they ideologically change the party? What kind of political culture did they introduce? How did Socialists frame the women activity inside the party?

In this article, the main characteristics of prostitution in the Chilean city Arica during the 1920s are being analysed. The phenomenon is looked at from the perspective of juridical sources, particularly criminal records. Methodologically, testimonies of sex workers and clients of the brothels were chosen to represent the “voices” of these subjects. It is being proposed that cohabitation was conditioned by the illegality of the social practices, distinguishing relations mediated by alcoholism, theft and violence. The conclusions reflect on the constitution of a “perverted” everyday life of the brothels and, subsequently, on the importance of diversifying as much the periods of analysis as the historic sources in regard to this business.

In this paper, we argue for incorporating the term “emotional resistances” to historiographical vocabulary. We understand “Emotional resistances” not only as subaltern affective expressions created by women to curb the “emotional regimes”, but also as cultural innovative knowledge with embedded political capital. This approach can help people to live more emancipated lives in our present time, as they are not only reactive practices to power useful simply in the past. We argue for expanding the historical meaning of “resistances”, relying on Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s appeal to build reparative epistemologies that can be particularly beneficial for feminism. From this perspective, to study the history of emotional resistances require a drawing upon the hegemonic archive, detuning of its organization and the generating of “other” archival spaces where resisting experiences be can studied. To exemplify the historiographical argument from the “other” archive, different photographic historical practices will be used. There will be a particular focus on recovering traces of women’s emotional resistances with which the Francoist emotional regime fattened its oppression.

XIX Century.
The 1861 Regulation of physician’s assistants and midwives was required to transform the way of conceiving midwives’ training and knowledge, due to a process of masculinization of the art of delivering and the introduction of its teaching as decided in formative regulated channels. In this sense, the purpose of this essay is to analyze its implementation in Seville —initial controversies, first teachers, training centers, studies, and finally release the first qualified midwives in this place— to finish unraveling the consequences derived from this process in the old feminine art of delivering.

Some authors connect witchcraft and sorcery to a pre-Christian religion; others, however, to mental diseases. After the analysis of various processes, we have concluded that sorcery in Mallorca has two components which, in principle, do not match with other authors. One was economic, since most women accused belonged to the group of socially excluded; the other was religious, because all prayers, spells and incantations were framed in the religiosity of the Baroque.

From the story with women gender perspective, this article discusses the established links between four women in Argentina, more specifically in the city of Rosario, between 1950 and 1980. This is the sisters and pedagogues Cossettini: Olga and Leticia; but that this time will be also studied with her sister Marta and her daughter Leila. The first two, always appointed as teachers and intellectuals, but rarely studied as women living, loving, feeling and experiencing the daily and family life. So, here we choose their stories, but this time everyday, to test a reading on a particular family consists of four females who decide to live together. In these practices, despite being a family of women stereotyped gender roles are replicated. So, availing ourselves of the documentary archive of Cossettini but also and mainly oral history, recover traces of lay everyday household shrine sisters.

The article focuses on the writings of the novelist and filmmaker Lorenza Mazzetti in the Communistillustrated weekly Vie Nuove during the 1960s. It shows how Mazzetti contested Catholictraditional conceptions of gender and femaleness; and how she elaborated a deep reflection on thesocial role of affects. Mazzetti encouraged her readers to avoid dependent and submissive relationships, and attacked conformism with an increasingly superficial society. The article suggests thatMazzetti’s experience can be considered as representative of the cultural changes occurring in Italyduring the 1960s and, more specifically, of the expectations and anxieties about modern consumersociety.

Scholarly studies on women and gender in relation to antifascism, carried out in different countries, have revealed a great variety of processes throughout the world. In the Argentine case, research has shown that antifascism, characterized by a great diversity of forms of expressions, mobilized vast social sectors in different ways and historical periods. With the goal of establishing the current state of the historiography, this article first explores the progress made in the respective fields of gender and antifascism in Argentina in the last decades. It then analyzes a series of recent scholarly works that have incorporated the contributions made in both fields, showing the possibilities of integrating perspectives from both gender and antifascism. The article concludes by offering a research agenda that could guide future research

Who are the religious medieval women? The sidestepping of the feminine identity: from symbol to stereotype

The question of medieval women’s identity, such as visionnaries and mystical seers, has been studied in many precious and pertinent ways. These women however remain elusive because their femininity, although it can be patently identified through a cultural masculine framework, calls to overtaking this social status, in order to put gender into news and secondary perspectives. In this paper, we aim to show how religious medieval women sidestepped our feminine identity and faded into the background beside their spiritual aspirations and writings. Their femininity shirked in order to impose itself further genders, in basing on masculine social patterns, in using topic literaries allegories and symbols of feminine theology, through stereotyped transmission of biblical doctrine.

These pages give an overview of how the public and private space influenced the forms of religiosity of Roman women. Although the differences are not as clear as we would like, we must not forget that a devotee should be able to do everything necessary to achieve official and domestic religious stability. The literary, epigraphic and especially archaeological sources of Pompeii bring us closer to the ritual practices where the feminine presence appears symbolized iconographically. Also, their religious activities in the public sphere were reserved to matronal organizations that played a decisive role in certain festivities of the Roman calendar.

In the first decades of the twentieth century, Spanish art criticism witnessed the profession-""tion of artists, leaving names and scattered data that have allowed to reconstruct their history""aliza""in some cases. The history of sculptresses was a story of minorities in the minority collective of women artists. This text aims to reveal some names of sculptresses that transcended in artistic news of the studied period, and characterize the tone of the criticism they received in the context of gender controversy. Virile, and at the same time female, criticism ranged between praise to the authors who were able to dissimulate the female running to take themes and sculptural techniques considered masculine, and conversely, the exaltation of the sentimental and funny touches that sculptresses, as women, they added of genuine to their creations.

The fall of the Franco’s dictatorship will produce the start of a process of decriminalization of “feminine crimes” and gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans* identities as the same time as their organization as political movements. These formations are deployed in a time of political opening —the Democratic Transition—, facing both the internal problems of their movements, and the continuous obstacles imposed by the structures of the State that seemed to intentionally “forget” gender alterities. A clear example will be the Amnesty policies applied 1975-1977 that show how determined groups were legally and socially excluded because of masculine discourse of “common good”.

Doctors, memorialists and literary discourses (cordel) compose the documentary heterogeneous corpus of this study that has allowed us to check the criminalization of the salaried breastfeeding within urban families belonging to the working class, in a context of demand for these services in the charities administrations of the Portuguese State.

Travel literature is a genre well known by historiography; researchers have analyzed from journeys of Antiquity to Contemporaneity. Nevertheless, traditionally, those studies had shown a special interest in travel literature produced by masculine subjects, whereas that literature produced by female writers had been to a lesser extent. A fact that has been corrected in recent times thanks to the work of some authors who have tried to analyze the women’s travel writing. Therefore, within the current indicated, in this work we propose to present a series of women authors, some of them well known already, but others practically unknown in our country. These women, intrepid and bold travelers, traveled to Spain from the centuries of Modernity until the Nineteenth century. These are six women writers whose literary production, in the most cases, has not been translated into Spanish. For this reason, we will try to show through the translation of some passages of her works, of the analysis of the literary production of each one of these six women, and of the scientific literature consulted what was the vision that these women writers had and offered from Spain through their scriptural production. This will allow us to get closer to her biographies, her literary and professional careers and her stories about Spain. In addition, we present them according to a chronological point of view, in order to examine more comfortably evolution over several centuries of this women’s travel writing.

The objective of this article is to analyse the role played by women in wartimes in one of the main and most interesting plays written by Margaret Cavendish, duchess of Newcastle (1623-1673): Bell in Campo, which has become one of her most relevant Works because of the approach she made to the female participation in war and, at the same time, serves as a propagandist item for the Queen Henrietta Maria of England actions’. Besides, this play makes some political and social claims in relation to woman and her visibility in society which allows us to consider Newcastle’s writings within the first English feminism of 17th century.

Among everyday objects, clothing gets particular meanings that transcend the pragmatic func-tion and are inserted into the field of symbolic, projecting an image of the person and taking part in the construction of gender and social status representation. From postmortem inventories we analyze changes and continuities in women’s clothing in the city of Córdoba (Argentina) during XIX century; approaching that will have descriptive and quantitative overtones but both will be located within a social, political and economic context which will explain those changes and recognize some of the discourse that crossed this daily practice.

In 1958 an article about María Luisa Caturla was published in Blanco y Negro magazine. According to Mercedes Formica, the author of that text, this art historian deserved a place in the section Gallery of interesting women, because she was a remarkable researcher. Caturla’s career began with the intellectual encouragement of Ortega y Gasset and grew thanks to her friends, among others the Countess of Campo Alange and the academic Mercedes Gaibrois, until she managed to stand out in the History of Art during the Francoism, a world taken over by men in that period. Nowadays, however, when we look back to the history of historiography, we often do not find her name. The goal of this paper is to review her career through the correspondence with her “literary godfather”, Francisco Javier Sánchez Cantón, and therefore to delve into the system of art during those years.

We present the trajectory of the teacher and pedagogue from Navarre Micaela Díaz Rabaneda, for some people the continuation of Concepción Arenal. This professor of the Normal School of Teachers of Madrid and parliamentary of the National Assembly of Primo de Rivera was one of the most notable representatives of the Catholic feminism of the first third of the xx century. She collaborated with prestigious personalities of her time, in various scientific committees and societies of various kinds such as Pediatrics, Spanish Hygiene or Central Patronage of Abnormal, with the aim of improving the situation of women, introducing changes in the education of the children and the sanitary conditions of the population. She also demonstrated her strong politic and religious convictions. To carry out this investigation several archivist, hemerographic and bibliographic sources have been consulted with the aim of contrasting this figure with feminists of other tendencies that had relationship with her.

This article intends to study in depth the experiences of women who practised teaching in Argentina during the period 1920-1950. Within this large subject, what concerns us is a specific aspect: female teachers` love life; more precisely, if practising teaching tensed the consolidation of relationship/love ties. So, using an interpretative reading of letters written by males and addressed to female teachers, we seek to reflect the difficulties between love and teaching profession. Those tensions give rise to sensitive figures such as admiration, friendship, and lack of love.

The essay deals with the life, narrative and ideology of Dolores Medio in order to expose the causes of the silencing of which they have been object until the moment. Among these causes, it is necessary to point out the image that the Spanish press diffused of her in the fifties and sixties, by virtue of which the republican feminist and pioneer of the teaching that the novelist incarnated was soon turned into an apolitical and melodramatic Cinderella. The work also links the neglect in which the author has fallen to her declassification process, but also to the idiosyncrasy of the Asturian creator, who, unlike established models, always knew that freedom had its price.

Opposite of the generalized idea about the failure of the wet nurses who worked for/in hospitals —very common in the studies of the eighteenth century—, an unexpected discovery considered relevant because of the shortage of studies about women in sixteenth century in the north of the kingdom of Granada, let us consider the activity of the wet nurses as a job, which was ruled and also a source of funds for them and their families. Women had the leading role in the whole productive process and in the labour structure, appearing with their own name in the checking, regardless of the marital status. In that way, in an only eight years interval, we have known the identity of more than a hundred women that, in Guadix and in this area, have been employed for an institution that recognises their value and this labour success will have social and economical consequences in the community. In the other hand, we have not found gender differences in newborn abandon, adoption, or survival of children, as is revealed in other studies.

Through the memory of some of its protagonists, with this work we approach the domestic employment carried out by hundreds of women from Rota after the installation of the US military base in its municipality. The aim is not only to visualize activities never taken into account when assessing the economic impact of this fact for the town, but, above all to understand, after a first contextualizing approach to living conditions prior to the arrival of the Americans, how these young female workers lived the paradoxes between the traditional ideological discourse imposed by the regime and the images of modernity that came from their new employers.

Chadwick and Courtivron analyzed in their work The others important the creative space generated between those artists who were couple. Facing the traditional historiography where the creativity was described as the individual lonely battle (usually a man), these women researchers considered that in couple artists the interrelations of their lives and work will make the influence to be mutual. Nevertheless, the work of the woman artist is still being interpreted as dependent of the male part of the couple. In the Spanish contemporary Art History this situation was emphasized as the consequence of the sociocultural conditions of the Francoist Period, in which names as Magda Bolumar were made invisible, although this happens further than this chronological period affecting even to 21st Century artists as Patricia Gadea.

Doña Ana Zurita Ochoa was a Spanish woman who lived her life in Cuenca de las Indias in the first half of the 17th century. She belonged to the ethnic, social, and economic elite, thus occupying a “privileged” place in relation to the indigenous, black and mestizo people that were part of the city. During her everyday activities, she also established relationships with her equals, did business, lived, and defended herself from their insults. Her letters (unpublished manuscripts that rest in the National History Archive-Nucleus of Azuay) written to her husband, don Salvador de Poveda, are a testimony of her existence. In them, through writing, doña Ana constructs and projects images of herself as mother, wife, lover, and neighbor in Cuenca within a context of the Audience in Quito. She writes in and from the margin of the letter’s paper; thus, she uses this space as a “trick,” a way of reaffirming her centrality. In other words, she manifests her voice and makes herself known in the history of women.
